The end-of-summer festival in the Matese village
On the first Sunday of September, the village of Castelpizzuto, in the province of Isernia, celebrates Saint Lucy. Unlike the winter observance on December 13th, in this small town in the Molise Matese region, the saint is celebrated at the end of summer, when the town is still lively with those who have returned for the holidays.
The day is marked by the mass and the procession with the saint's effigy through the streets of the center. The festival represents one of the last major community events before autumn and ideally closes the season of religious observances in Castelpizzuto.
Saint Lucy completes the annual cycle of festivals in Castelpizzuto, which includes the patron saint Agatha in February, Saint Dominic Abbot with the tradition of the Serpent-Handlers in May, and Saint Anne in July. A living heritage of traditions preserved in one of the least populated municipalities in Molise.
The Saint Lucy's Festival is renewed in Castelpizzuto on the first Sunday of September, September 6, 2026. The day includes mass and a procession with the saint's effigy along the village streets, the last major community event of the summer in the Matese village.
