About Saint Lucy

On the first Sunday of September, Castelpizzuto, a small village at the foot of the Matese mountains in the province of Isernia, celebrates Saint Lucy. An end-of-summer festival, with mass and procession, that closes the season of religious events in the town and brings the community together before autumn returns.

Saint Lucy at the end of summer

On the first Sunday of September, the village of Castelpizzuto, in the province of Isernia, celebrates Saint Lucy. Unlike the winter observance on December 13th, in this small town in the Molise Matese region, the saint is celebrated at the end of summer, when the town is still lively with those who have returned for the holidays.

Mass and procession

The day is marked by the mass and the procession with the saint's effigy through the streets of the center. The festival represents one of the last major community events before autumn and ideally closes the season of religious observances in Castelpizzuto.

The village's festival calendar

Saint Lucy completes the annual cycle of festivals in Castelpizzuto, which includes the patron saint Agatha in February, Saint Dominic Abbot with the tradition of the Serpent-Handlers in May, and Saint Anne in July. A living heritage of traditions preserved in one of the least populated municipalities in Molise.
