The December 13th devotion in the Fortore valley, in the province of Benevento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
On December 13th, when the days are among the shortest of the year and the Fortore valley is wrapped in a winter chill, San Bartolomeo in Galdo celebrates the Saint Lucy Festival. This occasion is part of the official calendar of religious feasts published by the Municipality of San Bartolomeo in Galdo, in the province of Benevento, alongside the patronal feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle on August 24th, the Feast of Maria SS. Incoronata, and Corpus Domini with its flower festival. It is not a tourist-oriented event, but a deeply rooted date in the town's devotional calendar, repeated year after year without the need for fanfare: December 13th remains December 13th.
Lucy, a martyr from Syracuse venerated throughout Italy, is traditionally invoked as the protector of sight and eyes. Her name evokes light, and her feast falls at the time of year when daylight is scarcest; this symbolic value has been preserved in the small towns of the Campanian Apennines, where devotion intertwines with the beginning of the Christmas season. In San Bartolomeo in Galdo, the feast maintains a sober, communal character, closer to prayer than to a secular festival.
The focal point of the feast is the church of Santa Lucia, a subsidiary building of the Parish of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle (Archdiocese of Benevento), located in the Santa Lucia district, outside the town center. Local historical sources reveal its rural origins: an 1853 document kept in the Diocesan Archive of Lucera describes it as a country chapel belonging to the Congregation of Charity, with sacred furnishings kept in the town's Mother Church. It is a detail that perfectly illustrates the religious geography of the Fortore, characterized by chapels scattered among the fields and the confraternities that cared for them.
The day follows the typical rhythm of religious feasts in small Sannio towns: Eucharistic celebration in honor of the saint, moments of devotion, and family gatherings. A detailed program is not widely advertised online; as with many parish observances, times and arrangements are known year by year through parish notices, posters hung around town, and word of mouth. Visitors from outside the area are advised to contact the parish or municipal offices in the days leading up to the event.
Saint Lucy is not an isolated event: the San Bartolomeo December opens with the Immaculate Conception, celebrated with the tradition of bonfires, known in the local dialect as a Madonna i' fucarell'. Between the fires of December 8th, the light of Saint Lucy on the 13th, and the approach of Christmas, the month forms a small sequence of winter rites that are worth knowing to understand the identity of this corner of Campania on the borders of Puglia and Molise.
San Bartolomeo in Galdo is a town of about 4,100 inhabitants perched at an altitude of 597 meters, overlooking the Fortore River valley, on the border between Campania, Puglia, and Molise; it is the seat of the Fortore Mountain Community. Its origins date back to 1326, when Abbot Nicola da Ferrazzano obtained approval from King Robert of Anjou to found the settlement. The Mother Church, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, was consecrated on July 8, 1703, by Cardinal Vincenzo Maria Orsini, the future Pope Benedict XIII, and had already served as a cathedral for the diocese of Vulturara in the 14th century. Since 2010, the historic center has also been a small open-air museum thanks to the mural season, which brought contemporary art to the walls of the houses.
Those looking for the spectacular Christmas displays of large cities will not find them here. However, those who want to understand how winter is experienced in a village in the Campanian hinterland—mass, bells, uphill streets, the cold wind coming from the Fortore—will find in the Saint Lucy Festival an authentic opportunity to enter the rhythm of a community that continues to mark the year with its traditions.
The Saint Lucy Festival is a fixed-date event: December 13th. In San Bartolomeo in Galdo, in the province of Benevento, it appears on the official calendar of religious feasts published by the Municipality, along with the patronal feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle and Corpus Domini with the flower festival.
At the moment, however, no program for 2026 has been published: neither the times of the celebrations nor any community moments around the church of Santa Lucia, in the Santa Lucia district. This is the normal situation for parish feasts in the small towns of the Fortore, communicated locally through notices and posters in the days preceding the event.
Those who intend to participate can contact the Parish of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle (Archdiocese of Benevento) or the Municipality of San Bartolomeo in Galdo to confirm the date and times. We will update this page as soon as the program is made public.
San Bartolomeo in Galdo is best reached by car, traveling up the Fortore valley from the Benevento area or from the Molise and Puglia sides. The town is located near the regional borders in the Sannio Apennines. In winter, it is advisable to check road conditions in the hills and travel with appropriate clothing: at nearly 600 meters of altitude, mid-December temperatures can be quite cold.
Participation in religious celebrations is free and open to all. Since the program is not published in advance, to find out the times of mass and any related initiatives, it is advisable to contact the Parish of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle (Corso Roma, tel. +39 0824 963893) or the offices of the Municipality of San Bartolomeo in Galdo, which publishes the calendar of religious feasts on its official website.
