Two days of devotion, music, and Irpinian cuisine around May Day

In Vallesaccarda, a small town in the Baronia area of Avellino province, the Saint Joseph the Worker Festival marks the transition from late April to May Day. It is one of those local festivals that have always defined the calendar in Irpinia: two days where the community gathers in the streets, amidst food stalls, brass bands, moments of prayer, and evening entertainment. The feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, set for May 1st, naturally bridges the religious dimension and the civil celebration of Labor Day. Here, this dual meaning is felt quite concretely: the saint, celebrated by the liturgical calendar as a craftsman, speaks to a town that has always lived off the land, shepherding, and agri-food labor.
The most poignant moment is May 1st. In the morning, a religious service is held, followed immediately by the procession of Saint Joseph through the town center, accompanied by the band and the faithful. Devotion to the saint is deeply rooted in the municipal territory: one of Vallesaccarda's hamlets is named San Giuseppe, and on March 19th, the town still lights the traditional Saint Joseph bonfires, another fixed appointment in the local calendar. The late April festival is therefore the second act of a devotion that spans the entire spring.
The entertainment highlights are concentrated on the evening of April 30th and the afternoon of May 1st. In the 2025 edition, the stage hosted Gigione, a highly popular interpreter of Neapolitan songs beloved by Southern festival audiences, followed late at night by a DJ set by Enzo Maraia. The following day featured the Cittร di Rocchetta Sant'Antonio Brass Band, an open-to-all briscola card tournament, cinema under the stars with two evening screenings, a lottery draw, and closing fireworks.
As in every Irpinian festival, food stalls play a central role: they open on the evening of April 30th and resume on the morning of May 1st, offering dishes from the local peasant cuisine. The agri-food sector is the true backbone of Vallesaccarda's economy, which counts trilliโa local type of fresh pastaโamong its recognized traditional products. Cheeses, cured meats, bread, and traditional Baronia first courses complete the offerings provided by the Committee's kitchens.
An element that distinguishes this festival from other local fairs is the community lunch on May 1st, which in the 2025 edition took place at the ECO Sentiero Fiumarella, immersed in nature just outside the town center. It is a convivial moment that combines the tradition of the May Day picnic with the promotion of the area's nature trails, which are also popular for trekking among the mountain villages of the Baronia.
Vallesaccarda is located at an altitude of about 650 meters, in the eastern end of the province of Avellino, on the border between Campania and Puglia. An autonomous municipality since 1958 and part of the Ufita Mountain Community, it has just over a thousand inhabitants distributed between the center and seven hamlets: Coccaro, Mattine, San Giuseppe, Serro D'Annunzio, Cotugno, Vasoria, and San Lorenzo. It borders Trevico, Scampitella, San Sossio Baronia, and Anzano di Puglia. The town's actual patronal feast is that of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated in August; however, the Saint Joseph the Worker anniversary remains one of the most anticipated events of the year, as it effectively kicks off the outdoor festival season.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Vallesaccarda together with the Festival Committee, with the collaboration of Montecristo Produzioni Artistiche e Teatrali for the artistic portion. The initiatives take place in the town's public spaces, with the center closed to traffic during the evening hours. The festival is also featured on the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino, which publishes the detailed program every year.
As of the update of this entry, it has not been possible to find an official announcement regarding the 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph the Worker Festival in Vallesaccarda. Neither the Municipality's website nor the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino report dates or a program for this year.
However, the festival is a historically recurring appointment in the town's calendar, linked to the May 1st holiday and the strong local devotion to Saint Joseph, after whom one of the municipal hamlets is also named. In recent editions, the event has spanned two days, with food stalls opening on the evening of April 30th, a concert and DJ set in the square, followed by a brass band, religious service, procession, community lunch, tournaments, outdoor cinema, and fireworks on May 1st.
This entry will be updated as soon as the organizers announce the dates and the detailed program.
By car: from Naples, take the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Lacedonia or Vallata, then follow provincial roads towards Vallesaccarda (about 2 hours from Naples, 1 hour from Avellino). From Foggia, it takes just over an hour via Anzano di Puglia. By train: the nearest useful stations are on the Foggia-Benevento line, with onward travel by bus or taxi; however, the most convenient connection remains by car.
During the festival, parking areas are available on the outskirts of the town; streets affected by stalls and the procession are closed to traffic. The community lunch takes place at the ECO Sentiero Fiumarella, reachable in a few minutes from the center.
Access to initiatives in the town's public spaces is free of charge. Consumption at food stalls and participation in the community lunch are paid, with prices communicated by the Festival Committee.
Accommodation in Vallesaccarda is limited: there are farmhouses and bed and breakfasts in the towns of the Baronia (Trevico, Scampitella, San Sossio Baronia, Vallata) and in Ariano Irpino, about half an hour away.
At an altitude of 650 meters, late April evenings can be cool: it is advisable to bring a jacket. For the evening outdoor screenings, a folding chair or a blanket is useful. The updated program is released by the Municipality's channels and the Sistema Irpinia portal in the weeks leading up to the event.
