Romagnola devotion and conviviality meet in Gemmano, in the heart of Valconca
In the small village of Gemmano, overlooking the Conca Valley in the province of Rimini, the Festival of Saint Joseph returns every spring to honor the figure of the carpenter saint, patron of fathers and workers. This is not the patronal feast of the village, dedicated to Saint Sebastian, but a heartfelt event that brings the community together around the tradition of March 19th, Saint Joseph's Day throughout Italy.
The heart of the celebration is the Holy Mass, officiated in the Church of San Lorenzo Martire, the main place of worship in the Municipality of Gemmano. It is a moment of reflection that draws the faithful from the village and surrounding hamlets, keeping alive a popular devotion rooted in the peasant culture of the Rimini hinterland.
After the service, the festival changes tone and becomes an occasion for gathering: a community dinner with a typical Romagnola menu is held at the Sala Pillitteri. The table offers the simple and generous flavors of tradition, from grilled sardines to the ever-present piadina, accompanied by a first course and salad. It is the moment when the spiritual dimension gives way to conviviality, to being together, and to the pleasure of good Romagna cuisine.
The festival is organized by the Parish of San Lorenzo Martire in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Gemmano, the same entities that animate the village's event calendar throughout the year. The initiative is open to all and is supported by voluntary contributions: not a spectacular event, but one of those authentic recurring celebrations that tell the identity of a small municipality in Emilia-Romagna, where faith, rural roots, and hospitality blend into an evening of celebration.
Part of the Valconca Union, Gemmano is a hilly village surrounded by greenery, also known for its proximity to the Onferno Oriented Nature Reserve and its caves. Participating in the Festival of Saint Joseph is also a way to discover a less touristy but genuine corner of the Rimini hinterland, far from the coast but rich in history, nature, and traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Festival of Saint Joseph in Gemmano was held on Wednesday, March 18. The program included Holy Mass at 6:30 PM in the Church of San Lorenzo Martire, followed at 7:30 PM by a convivial dinner in the Sala Pillitteri. The typical Romagnola menu featured a first course, grilled sardines, salad, and piadina. The initiative, open to all and supported by voluntary contributions, was promoted by the Parish of San Lorenzo Martire together with the Pro Loco of Gemmano.
