Ten days of faith, tradition, and community in the young municipality of Misiliscemi
The Saint Joseph Patronal Feast is the quintessential identity-defining event for the Municipality of Misiliscemi, in the Province of Trapani, Western Sicily. Misiliscemi is one of Italy's youngest municipalities, established in 2021 when eight districts separated from the territory of Trapani: Fontanasalsa, Guarrato, Rilievo, Locogrande, Marausa, Palma, Salinagrande, and Pietretagliate. In this context, the figure of Saint Joseph, proclaimed patron saint on March 19, 2023, by the Bishop of Trapani, has become the symbol that brings together once-distant districts, giving a common soul to the new community.
The festivities unfold over the entire novena, from March 10 to 19, touching the various districts of the municipality. Each day alternates moments of faith with cultural, educational, and social activities, involving the parish communities of Palma, Salinagrande, and Pietretagliate alongside other local groups. It begins with Holy Masses and the blessing of votive breads, continuing with choral concerts, biblical catechesis, testimonials, conferences on Saint Joseph's iconography, and activities dedicated to children.
Among the most heartfelt events is the Traditional Vampata in honor of Saint Joseph, the large evening bonfire lit on March 18 in Palma for the First Solemn Vespers, an ancient propitiatory rite of Sicilian tradition. That same evening, in Piazza G. Montalto, the Sfinciotello Festival takes place, dedicated to the typical pastry associated with Saint Joseph's Day, accompanied by local craft displays.
The peak of the festivities is March 19, Saint Joseph's Day: after the solemn Holy Mass featuring the symbolic delivery of the town keys by the Mayor, the evening features a procession through the town streets, concluding with a fireworks display. It is the moment when all of Misiliscemi comes together, blending faith, tradition, and volunteerism which, as the organizers love to remind us, walk hand in hand.
More than just a patronal feast, the Saint Joseph celebrations in Misiliscemi recount the rebirth of a rural area in the Trapani region and the deep bond between its districts. For visitors, it is an authentic opportunity to discover the Sicily of religious traditions, popular cuisine, and community, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
The 2026 edition followed the usual calendar from March 10 to 19. On March 10, Holy Mass and blessing of votive breads in Marausa; on March 11, a concert by the "Et ero custos" choir in Locogrande; on March 12, biblical catechesis with Father Luca Milazzo in Pietretagliate. This was followed by the testimony "Fatherhood and Tenderness" (March 13, Salinagrande), international games in Piazza G. Montalto in Palma (March 14), the 'Ammito' and solidarity lunch (March 15, Salinagrande), and the conference "Saint Joseph: Representation in Art" with Monsignor Liborio Palmeri, along with the photography contest awards (March 17). On March 18, after the First Solemn Vespers, the Traditional Vampata in Palma and the third Sfinciotello Festival in Piazza G. Montalto. On March 19, the patron saint's day, a solemn Holy Mass with the delivery of the keys by the Mayor, and in the evening, the procession with fireworks.
Misiliscemi is located in Western Sicily, a few kilometers from Trapani. By car, it is accessible via the SS115; the Trapani-Birgi (Vincenzo Florio) airport is just a few minutes away and partially falls within the municipal territory. The various districts (Palma, Salinagrande, Pietretagliate, Marausa, Locogrande) are connected by the provincial roads of the Trapani area.
The festivities are held every year from March 10 to 19. All events are free to attend. For the detailed program and schedules, it is recommended to contact the Municipality of Misiliscemi (tel. +39 0923 1830300).
