The dual Arbëreshë celebration in Palazzo Adriano, featuring votive tables in March and a September procession
In the heart of the Sicani Mountains, in the province of Palermo, the village of Palazzo Adriano preserves one of the most fascinating devotional festivals in inland Sicily. The Saint Joseph Festival is a double event here, returning twice a year: with the votive tables on March 19th and the solemn procession on the first Sunday of September. The town, made world-famous as the set of the film Cinema Paradiso, is an Arbëreshë community: founded in the 15th century by Greek-Albanian refugees, it still maintains the Greek-Byzantine rite and belongs to the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi.
The most characteristic moment is March 19th, the day of the Saint's liturgical feast. In the homes of devotees who have made a vow for a grace received, magnificent tables are set up: true altars laden with seasonal produce, sweets, and traditional dishes. The absolute stars are the Saint Joseph votive breads, hand-molded into symbolic shapes that recall the carpenter's tools and the symbols of the Holy Family. Alongside the bread, there is no shortage of pasta with sardines, battered broccoli, sparaci (wild asparagus), cardoons, and traditional sweets like sfingi and pignolata. The tables are blessed on March 18th; on the day of the feast, five people represent the Saints and consume the banquet, while friends and relatives are invited to share the meal as a sign of grace received.
On the first Sunday of September, the festival is renewed with its most solemn and communal dimension: the statues of Saint Joseph and Our Lady of Mount Carmel are carried in procession through the village streets, in a centuries-old tradition deeply rooted in the identity of Palazzo Adriano. A large table is set up on the church square, and blessed bread is distributed to the faithful.
The festival is much more than a religious celebration: it is a window into the soul of a community that, despite having largely lost the Albanian language, preserves its faith and customs through the Byzantine rite. During the March days, the village comes alive with tastings of bread, oil, cheeses, cured meats, and sweets, folk group performances, open museums, and the exhibition of votive breads, in an atmosphere that combines spirituality, gastronomy, and cultural memory.
Nestled in the Sicani Mountains, Palazzo Adriano offers one of the most scenic historic centers in Sicily, with its famous square, octagonal fountain, and two mother churches facing each other, a symbol of the coexistence between the Latin and Greek rites. Visiting the village during the Saint Joseph Festival means discovering a living heritage of popular traditions at the crossroads of Sicily and Albania.
For the 2026 edition, the March program opened on Wednesday, March 18th at 5:30 PM with the Holy Rosary of Saint Joseph and at 6:00 PM with the First Vespers, followed by the Eucharistic Celebration presided over by His Excellency Monsignor Raffaele De Angelis, Bishop of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi, and the blessing of the tables. On Thursday, March 19th, the day of the liturgical feast, the great Saint Joseph Table was set up with seasonal produce, votive breads, and traditional sweets; in the evening, the procession of the Saint's statue took place through the village streets. The festival was completed on the first Sunday of September 2026 with the solemn procession of the statues of Saint Joseph and Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the distribution of blessed bread.
Palazzo Adriano is located in the Sicani Mountains, in the province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached from Palermo (about 1 hour and 30 minutes) along the SS118 and internal provincial roads; the nearest airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi.
The votive tables take place around March 18th-19th; the solemn procession of the statues of Saint Joseph and Our Lady of Mount Carmel falls on the first Sunday of September.
Participation in religious celebrations and the tables is free and open to all. For updated schedules, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Saint Joseph Association and the Municipality of Palazzo Adriano.
