Votive bread altars and the 'Cene' in the heart of Western Sicily
The Saint Joseph Festival in Salemi, in the province of Trapani, is much more than a religious observance: it is an identity heritage that the Municipality and local associations renew every year around March 19th. Under the title Contemporary Tradition, the event spans an entire week in the village's historic center—one of Italy's most beautiful—transforming it into a grand sacred narrative made of bread, devotion, and hospitality.
At the heart of the festival are the Saint Joseph 'Cene', votive altars set up in homes and public spaces throughout Salemi. These are wooden structures richly adorned with oranges, lemons, bay laurel branches, and above all, the famous votive breads, hand-molded by the local women into symbolic shapes: fish, ladders, pliers, the three nails, and nature-inspired motifs. It is a tradition that has made Salemi famous worldwide and involves entire families in its preparation every year.
During the week, the 'Cene' can be visited from morning until evening. The most solemn moment is the 'Invito ai Santi' (Invitation to the Saints), the ritual where three people, impersonating the Holy Family, are welcomed and served dozens of ritual dishes. The table can feature up to 101 courses, following a vow of abundance and hospitality.
On March 19th, the main day, the Holy Mass and the historic 'Parti di San Giuseppe' play take place—an ancient popular performance in dialect. Alongside religious rites, the festival offers the '101 pietanze – I sapori nel Borgo' food and wine trail, set up in the atrium of the Jesuit College, as well as workshops on votive bread organized by the Pro Loco, art exhibitions, itinerant performances by folk groups and marching bands, and visits to the historic center's churches.
The event also embraces sport with the 'Raduno dei Pani', a mountain bike event now in its eighth edition, and a vintage car rally. A multidisciplinary program that makes the Saint Joseph Festival of Salemi one of the most anticipated appointments in the Sicilian calendar, capable of uniting the spirituality of the 'Cene' with the vitality of an entire community.
