Ten days of faith, tradition, and solidarity in the heart of Campobello di Licata
In the town of Campobello di Licata, in the province of Agrigento, the Saint Joseph Festival is one of the most cherished events in the religious and local calendar. Organized by the Sacra Famiglia Pastoral Unit โ Saint Joseph Parish, the celebration spans about ten days throughout March, culminating in the solemnity of March 19th, dedicated to the Glorious Patriarch.
The heart of the local tradition lies in the brotherhood tables (the 'Saint Joseph tables'), which are set up and blessed in various neighborhoods across the town. These are lavishly decorated tables, created through the offerings of the faithful, which are then shared as a sign of charity. Alongside the tables, the thrones of the Sacred Characters are unveiled: actors in traditional costumes portray the Holy Family and the Angel, and the community pays them homage throughout the festival days.
In the days leading up to the solemnity, the schedule is filled with novenas, themed Holy Masses (dedicated to missionaries, workers, families, and the suffering), the blessing of traditional breads, and prayer sessions involving local schools, nursing homes, and associations.
The main day begins in the morning with the presentation of the Staff of Saint Joseph to the angel in front of the church, followed by the gathering of the 'little Saint Josephs' and the 'little Madonnas' in Piazza Martiri di Modena. The children's procession winds through the town streets, passing the throne of the Sacred Characters and the Town Hall. This is followed by the Solemn Mass, the Sacred Performance of 'The Flight into Egypt', and, in the afternoon, the procession of the Patriarch's statue on a float adorned with flowers and lights, accompanied by the 'G. Marengo' Brass Band. The evening concludes with fireworks and the return of the statue to the church.
The charitable dimension is an integral part of the festival: during the celebration, food drives and solidarity initiatives are organized, with part of the proceeds donated to the parish Caritas and other local organizations in the Agrigento area. It is a way to combine devotion to Saint Joseph with care for the most vulnerable members of the community.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph Festival in Campobello di Licata spanned ten days, from March 10th to 20th, each dedicated to a specific theme: school, missions, workers and entrepreneurs, life, families, forgiveness, and the suffering. Each day featured the Holy Rosary, Holy Masses, and the blessing of brotherhood tables in various neighborhoods of the town.
The highlight occurred on Thursday, March 19th, with the morning procession of the 'little Saint Josephs' and 'little Madonnas', the Solemn Mass presided over by Father Marco Damanti in the presence of civil and military authorities, the double performance of 'The Flight into Egypt', and the afternoon procession accompanied by the 'G. Marengo' Brass Band. The festival concluded in the evening with a fireworks display and the return of the statue to the church, followed on March 20th by a thanksgiving service and the return of the Staff to the parish priest.
The festivities take place throughout March, with the main day on March 19th, the solemnity of Saint Joseph.
