Devotion, procession, and the Sfincia Festival in the Old Town of Milazzo
The Saint Joseph Feast is one of the most cherished devotional events in the Old Town of Milazzo, located in the historic heart of the Tyrrhenian town in the province of Messina, Sicily. Promoted by the local parish with the patronage of the Municipality of Milazzo, the feast intertwines faith, devotion, folklore, and popular tradition in a celebration that attracts residents, devotees, and visitors every year.
The festivities begin with the novena in preparation for the solemnity: for nine days, the community gathers for the Holy Rosary, the chaplet to Saint Joseph, and the evening Eucharistic celebration. On March 19th, the day of the solemnity, the morning opens with celebratory firecrackers and the festive ringing of bells, followed by masses and the blessing of the Saint Joseph bread, one of the most beloved popular devotions in the Sicilian tradition. A moment of strong community value is the Saint Joseph Table, a shared lunch featuring traditional dishes offered by devotees and local businesses, a symbol of gratitude and fraternal sharing.
In April, the Old Town hosts the external festivities, with religious events and entertainment that involve the entire neighborhood. The highlight is the solemn procession of the statue of the Glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph: in the morning, the day opens with a parade by the Giovanni Paolo II Music Band through the city streets, while in the afternoon, the triumphant exit of the Saint travels through the village streets and the city center in a procession of faith and popular participation.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast has its delicious heart in the Sfincia Festival, set up on the picturesque staircase of the Milazzo Castle. The star is the sfincia, the typical pastry linked to the Saint Joseph feast, offered in numerous variations at the food stalls. The evening combines tastings, exhibition stands, and musical entertainment, creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere designed for all generations.
The Saint Joseph Feast is an invitation to discover the most genuine soul of Milazzo, where religious and gastronomic traditions merge into an event that tells the story of the Sicilian territory's identity.

The external festivities took place from April 16th to 19th. Saturday, April 18th, on the staircase of the Milazzo Castle, the Sfincia Festival returned, with stands opening at 6:30 PM, tastings of the typical pastry in numerous variations, and musical entertainment with DJ Carmelino La Rocca, the voice of Luana Merlino, and guests "I Falsi d'Autore".
