The patronal feast of Sperlinga, blending devotion, processions, and agricultural traditions
Every year, on June 24th, the village of Sperlinga celebrates its patron saint, Saint John the Baptist, with one of the most heartfelt events in the local calendar. Sperlinga is a small town in the province of Enna, Sicily, renowned for its extraordinary rock-hewn castle and for being one of the rare Gallo-Italic linguistic islands on the island. The patronal feast represents a moment when the entire community reconnects with its deepest identity, rooted in religious devotion and rural traditions.
The heart of the day is the solemn procession of the statue of Saint John the Baptist, which winds through the village streets accompanied by local authorities, a marching band, and a long parade of the faithful. Celebrations take place in the Mother Church of Saint John the Baptist, a significant building commissioned by Prince Giovanni Natoli, which houses 18th-century paintings, a historic organ, and a hexagonal Swabian tower converted into an apse. Throughout the day, there are various masses, the blessing of the town and surrounding countryside, and moments of communal prayer.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival maintains a strong bond with the rural world. On the day before the feast, the historic Livestock and Agricultural Traditions Fair is held, serving as a meeting point for local farmers and breeders, featuring displays of animals, agricultural tools, and traditional farming artifacts. It is a tradition that testifies to the agro-pastoral soul of Sperlinga and inland Sicily, where the saint's feast day was also a key milestone in the community's economic calendar.
Visiting Sperlinga during the patronal feast is also an opportunity to discover one of the most evocative villages in the province of Enna: the castle carved into the rock with its hypogean rooms, the maze of alleys in the historic center, and the atmosphere of a community that proudly preserves its traditions, from the Gallo-Italic dialect to hand-woven frazzate rugs. The feast of Saint John the Baptist is the perfect time to experience the authenticity of this corner of Sicily, amidst spirituality, folklore, and warm hospitality.
On June 24, 2026, Sperlinga renews its devotion to its patron saint, Saint John the Baptist. The day opens with masses in the Mother Church and continues with the solemn procession of the statue through the village streets, accompanied by the marching band and the faithful. The festival is preceded, on June 23rd, by the historic Livestock and Agricultural Traditions Fair.
Among the highlights of the 2026 edition, at 9:00 PM in Piazza Marconi, is the comedy show "Sono solo barzellette" with Salvo La Rosa and Giuseppe Castiglia, closing the day with music and entertainment for the whole community.
Sperlinga is located in the Sicilian hinterland, in the province of Enna, along the SS117 road connecting Nicosia and Mistretta. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (exit towards Enna or Mulinello) by continuing towards Nicosia. The nearest railway stations are in Enna or Catania, from which you can continue by bus or car.
The festival takes place on June 24th; the Livestock and Agricultural Traditions Fair is held on the eve (June 23rd). Celebrations are concentrated in the Mother Church and the streets of the historic center.
Admission to the celebrations and the procession is free. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes to navigate the steep alleys of the village and combining your visit with a tour of the rock-hewn castle.
