The patron saint festival of Monastero Bormida, in the heart of the Langa Astigiana

The Saint Giulia Patronal Feast is the most important occasion for the community of Monastero Bormida, a small municipality in the province of Asti nestled in the Langa Astigiana, in Piedmont. Saint Giulia is the patron saint of the village, and the church dedicated to her—along with the castle and the Romanesque bridge over the Bormida river—forms the monumental heart of the village. The feast traditionally falls in the month of May, bringing together residents and visitors in an atmosphere of devotion and conviviality typical of Piedmontese patronal festivals.
To understand the significance of this feast, one must look back at the very origins of the village. Around 1050, Benedictine monks, invited by the Aleramici marquises of Monferrato, founded a monastery here—the current castle—around which the settlement developed. The community was born from that religious nucleus, and the dedication to Saint Giulia preserves the memory of those ancient roots. The Church of Saint Giulia, with its slender 11th-century Romanesque bell tower—characterized by four distinct sides featuring openings, single-light windows, mullioned windows, and string-course cornices—is one of the most precious monuments in the Langa Astigiana.
As is customary in Piedmontese villages, the patronal feast combines religious observance with community spirit. The heart of the day is the liturgical celebration in honor of the saint, often accompanied by a procession through the streets of the historic center. Surrounding these celebrations are the village festivities, providing a meeting point for families and those returning to their home village for this special occasion.
Visiting Monastero Bormida during the patronal feast means discovering an authentic Langa village: the castle with its hundred rooms, now home to the Town Hall and museum spaces; the majestic Romanesque bridge over the Bormida river—one of the most interesting examples of medieval civil engineering in the valley; and the surrounding hills, a land of wines and peasant traditions. It is an opportunity to experience the soul of this corner of the province of Asti up close.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Giulia Patronal Feast in Monastero Bormida is set for around May 22, 2026. As per tradition, the central moment is the liturgical celebration in honor of the patron saint, the heart of a day of celebration for the entire village community.
