The patron saint of Fontanafredda between the Palio delle Contrade and medieval atmospheres
In Fontanafredda, on the outskirts of Pordenone, the festival of the patron saint Saint George the Martyr is one of the most cherished events of the year. Celebrated every April, it intertwines the religious dimension with the spectacular, transforming the town into an open-air stage where medieval atmospheres, district rivalries, and popular traditions are revived. An event that, since 2008, the organizing committee has carried forward with growing success.
The heart of the festival is the Palio delle Contrade, the competition that sees the four districts of the town challenge each other in tests of skill, ingenuity, and teamwork. It is a tradition that fuels healthy rivalry and a strong sense of belonging, involving entire families and generations in preparing floats, costumes, and challenges. Winning the palio is the pride of an entire year.
Surrounding the Palio is a rich historical reenactment program: equestrian performances, fire-eater and juggler shows, medieval encampments, period music, and the opening of the historical market with costumed artisans and merchants. For the little ones, there are dedicated workshops and activities, while the religious dimension finds its most solemn moment in the open-air Holy Mass in honor of the patron saint.
Good food is not missing: the gastronomic stands of the four districts offer traditional Friulian specialties, accompanied by local wines, in a festive atmosphere that combines taste and conviviality. The event, supported by the Municipality of Fontanafredda, is the ideal opportunity to experience the community spirit of this lively center in the Pordenone plain.
The 2026 edition of the Saint George the Martyr Festival takes place on April 25 and 26. Two days dedicated to the patron saint of Fontanafredda, featuring the open-air Holy Mass, the Palio delle Contrade, and a packed medieval reenactment program: equestrian performances, fire-eaters, jugglers, encampments, period music, and a historical market, with gastronomic stands run by the four districts.
Detailed schedules for individual events will be available on the official festival channels.
