The patron saint festival of Cannero Riviera, on the shores of Lake Maggiore
The Saint George Martyr Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year for the community of Cannero Riviera, a charming town in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province, Piedmont, nestled on the western shore of Lake Maggiore. Every year, around April 23rd, the day of the saint's liturgical memorial, the town honors its patron with a series of religious celebrations and community gatherings that attract residents, vacationers, and visitors alike.
The celebrations revolve around the Parish Church of Saint George, an elegant 19th-century building that overlooks the village and is dedicated to the warrior saint. This is where the masses and moments of reflection that mark the festival days take place. The patronal solemnity is an opportunity to rediscover the deepest identity of this lakeside community, where faith and folk traditions remain vibrant and well-attended.
Alongside the spiritual dimension, the festival offers the typical features of a true village feast: the music of the Corpo Filarmonico Cannerese, a historic band that accompanies the most important celebrations, and the Sweets Fair, where homemade treats prepared by families are offered to support local initiatives, such as the restoration of the San Rocco oratory facade.
Known for its mild microclimate and the famous Castles of Cannero emerging from the lake waters, Cannero Riviera is one of the pearls of the Verbano. Participating in the patronal feast means experiencing the village in its most authentic dimension, far from the large tourist flows, and discovering the hospitality of a community that proudly guards its roots.
Cannero Riviera is located on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore. By car, it can be reached via the State Road 34 of Lake Maggiore. The nearest train station is Verbania-Pallanza, from where you can continue by bus or ferry. In summer and during festive periods, arriving by water with the Navigazione Lago Maggiore ferries is particularly picturesque.
The celebrations are held at the Parish Church of Saint George, in the center of the village.
