Three days of celebration, faith, and conviviality in the heart of Riano
The Saint George Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Riano, a village of a few thousand inhabitants north of Rome, in the Province of Rome (Metropolitan City of Rome Capital), in the Lazio region. Here, devotion to the knight saint goes beyond liturgy: alongside the religious anniversary, traditionally linked to April 23rd, the town organizes civil celebrations held on a different date during the warmer season, representing the true collective gathering for the Riano community.
The event is managed by the Pro Loco Riano Association, working in close collaboration with the Municipality of Riano, local associations, and merchants. It is a model of a festival that is entirely volunteer-run and self-financed: the citizens themselves, gathered in the Pro Loco, set up the stages, manage the kitchens, and welcome visitors, following the spirit summarized in the association's motto: "the Pro Loco is the town."
The stage for the event is the space in front of the Town Hall, named in May 2025 after Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino and previously known as Largo Montechiara. This is where the concert stage, food stalls, and public areas are set up, while the surrounding streets host the artisan market. The formula is that of a classic Lazio patronal festival: free admission, arriving in the late afternoon, dining outdoors, and staying until late for the music.
The musical programming is intentionally popular and cross-generational: prominent groups from the Roman scene, orchestras, and bands take turns throughout the evenings, often accompanied by a DJ set that continues until late. The closing is traditionally entrusted to a solemn moment dedicated to the patron saint, with highly acclaimed band performances.
The food stalls offer specialties from the Roman countryside and classic village festival favorites: arrosticini (skewered meat) and grilled meats, porchetta, traditional pasta dishes, beer, and wines from the Castelli and surrounding areas. It is the most direct way to discover the flavors of this corner of Lazio, just a stone's throw from the capital.
Those looking for an authentic festival, far from major tourist circuits but easily reachable from Rome, will find exactly that in Riano: a community that gets involved, affordable prices, free live music, and the chance to discover the Veio Regional Park and the Roman Sabina countryside during the day. A weekend that is worth the trip precisely because it is not built for visitors, but for the town: and visitors are simply welcome.
From June 19 to 21, 2026, Riano celebrated its patron saint with three days of festivities organized by the Pro Loco Riano together with the Municipality of Riano. The stage set up in Largo Giovanni Falcone e Paolo Borsellino hosted a different concert every evening, starting around 7:30 PM with completely free admission.
Opening on Friday the 19th was the Bandana Band; Saturday the 20th featured Orchestraccia, a reference group of the Roman popular scene; Sunday the 21st, the closing was entrusted to the Fanfare of the State Police Band, in solemn tribute to the patron saint. The evenings were completed by DJ sets from Andrea Gentile.
Every evening, the food stalls offered local specialties and grilled meat, particularly arrosticini. During the weekend, the first Magic Commander tournament was also held, a novelty dedicated to card game enthusiasts.
All events took place in Largo Giovanni Falcone e Paolo Borsellino, in Riano.
Riano is located about 25 km north of Rome. By car: from the Grande Raccordo Anulare, continue along the Via Flaminia (SS3) or Via Tiberina, taking the exit for Riano; the journey takes about 40 minutes. By public transport: Cotral bus lines departing from Rome (Saxa Rubra station of the Rome-Viterbo railway) with a stop in Riano.
The evenings are held in Largo Giovanni Falcone e Paolo Borsellino (formerly Largo Montechiara), the square in front of the Town Hall, in the town center.
Admission is free to all shows. Only food and drinks at the stalls are paid, with affordable prices.
Shows generally start in the early evening, around 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM. It is advisable to arrive early to dine in peace and find a spot near the stage. Parking in the town center is limited: it is better to leave the car in the peripheral areas and continue on foot. For accommodation, local options are limited: good alternatives can be found in Morlupo, Castelnuovo di Porto, and in the northern area of Rome.
