The great market fair on April 23rd in Mola di Bari
The Saint George Fair is one of the most anticipated events on the calendar in Mola di Bari, a town overlooking the Adriatic in the province of Bari, Puglia. Held annually on a fixed date, April 23rd, the day dedicated to Saint George the Martyr, it turns the town's streets into a huge open-air market fair that attracts numerous visitors from across the region.
As the local municipality notes, this event has seen significant changes over time. Originally, it was primarily an opportunity to purchase horses, harnesses, and agricultural tools: a market tied to the rural world and the local countryside, where farmers and breeders met to trade livestock and work equipment. Over the decades, the offerings have expanded and diversified significantly.
Today, the fair features the display and sale of virtually every type of product: you can find everything from clothing and accessories to home furnishings, furniture, and sofas, as well as a vast assortment of agricultural supplies. It is the classic, large traditional Southern market, where the ancient ritual of shopping blends with a stroll among the stalls and the chance to meet friends and neighbors.
The fair takes its name from Saint George, whose feast day falls on April 23rd. It should be noted that the religious patron saint of Mola di Bari is Our Lady of Sorrows, celebrated at a different time of year: the Saint George Fair is therefore primarily a commercial and popular event, a civic ritual that has marked the spring in Mola for generations.
For the occasion, the municipal administration issues an ordinance every year regulating traffic, including the closure of several central arteriesโsuch as Via Paolo VIโto make room for the stalls and ensure the smooth running of the event and the safety of visitors. The influx of people, including those from neighboring towns, makes this one of the liveliest days of the year for street vendors and local shops alike.

To ensure the smooth running of the event and the safety of the many visitors expected, the Municipality implemented temporary traffic measures, including the closure of Via Paolo VI, as also reported by the local public transport company.
Once again this year, the stalls offered a wide range of products: clothing, accessories, home furnishings, furniture, and sofas, as well as a rich assortment of agricultural supplies, a direct legacy of the ancient market of tools and harnesses from which the fair originates.
