The patronal feast of Avetrana in honor of Saint Blaise, an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Puglia
The Saint Blaise Patronal Feast is, without a doubt, the most anticipated and well-attended event of the year in Avetrana, a town in western Salento in the province of Taranto, bordering the Brindisi area and the Terra d'Arneo. For the Avetrana community, Saint Blaise is not just the patron saint: he is a true pillar of identity, so much so that many faithful experience these days with a fervor equal to, if not greater than, Easter celebrations. The feast is traditionally held between late April and May 1st, transforming the historic center into a stage for popular faith, music, and light.
The religious heart of the feast is the solemn procession through the town streets, followed by the Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Oria. A particularly moving moment is the blessing of the throat, a traditional rite rooted in the miracle attributed to Saint Blaise, a bishop and martyr who, according to tradition, saved a child from a fish bone stuck in his throat: hence the saint's connection to throat protection. During the feast days, the faithful pay homage to the Patron's relic in an atmosphere of deep devotion.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast showcases the full repertoire of the great Puglian patronal feast. The streets of the village light up with artistic illuminations, now famous for their light shows synchronized to music, while brass band concerts by renowned Salento and Puglian ensembles fill the square with classic marches and operatic transcriptions. There is no shortage of spectacular fireworks, both daytime and evening, which attract enthusiasts from all over the region, the animal fair, a legacy of the territory's agricultural vocation, and exhibitions and events dedicated to the community's memory.
The Saint Blaise Patronal Feast has been recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Puglia Region, a certification that validates its historical, anthropological, and community value. Behind the organization is the work of the San Biagio Feast Committee, which is also engaged throughout the year in solidarity activities alongside the parish Caritas of the Municipality of Avetrana.
Experiencing the Saint Blaise feast means immersing yourself in the most authentic soul of the Taranto-Salento area: a blend of the sacred and the profane, of centuries-old devotion and popular joy that unites entire families and attracts visitors from Puglia, Basilicata, and Calabria. Those arriving in Avetrana during these days will find a town in celebration, amidst the scents of street food, stalls, lights, and music that enliven every corner of the center.
The 2026 Saint Blaise Patronal Feast was held in Avetrana from April 28 to May 1, in an edition made even more significant by the recent recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Puglia Region. The illuminations by the Decolux company of Scorrano, set up for the third consecutive year on the theme "The Opera Theater", lit up the center with their light shows synchronized to music.
The religious heart of the feast, on April 28, was the solemn procession at 6:00 PM and the Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Bishop of Oria, Msgr. Vincenzo Pisanello, with the traditional blessing of the throat. April 29 was the day of the feast, with concerts by the "Paolo Falcicchio" Grand Brass Band of Gioia del Colle and the City of Squinzano band, entertainment for children, daytime fireworks, and the grand evening show by the Maxima Fireworks company of Bitonto. The feast continued on April 30 with the "Kawabonga Party" musical format and closed on May 1 with the first edition of the vintage car and motorcycle rally. Participation was high, with visitors arriving from Puglia, Basilicata, and Calabria.
