Saint Bernardino Patronal Festival

A celebration of faith and community in the Comino Valley

Every May, the municipality of Vicalvi celebrates its patronal festival in honor of Bernardino of Siena. This small village in the Comino Valley, located in the province of Frosinone in southern Lazio, gathers around its patron saint for a day that weaves together liturgy, culture, and live music. The liturgical feast of Saint Bernardino falls on May 20, and festivities are traditionally held around this date, often on the nearest weekend.

Bernardino of Siena (1380–1444), a Franciscan friar and one of the greatest preachers of the 15th century, is venerated in Vicalvi as the community's protector. The solemn celebrations in his honor represent the spiritual heart of the festival: the religious service draws faithful from the town and neighboring municipalities of the Comino Valley in a moment of deep devotion passed down through generations.

A program blending literature, liturgy, and music

In recent years, the municipal administration has enriched the patronal festival with cultural events that highlight the village's collective memory. In the 2025 edition, for example, the day opened at the municipal library with the presentation of the book "Uno e 50" by Maria Antonietta Rea, dedicated to the story of a young emigrant from the Ciociaria region in the late 19th century. This was followed by solemn celebrations in honor of the patron saint and, in the evening, a jazz concert from the "Note nei Borghi" series in Piazza G. Marconi, promoted by Provincia Creativa, concluding with a public tasting. It is a format that unites literature, religious tradition, and music in the heart of the historic center.

The village of Vicalvi and its castle

The festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most evocative villages in the Ciociaria region. Vicalvi is dominated by an imposing 12th-century Lombard fortress with an unmistakable profile, which overlooks the Comino Valley and speaks to its strategic importance: in the 16th century, the troops of Charles V found refuge here. Walking through the alleys, you will encounter the baronial palace with the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, the ancient Church of San Nicandro with its Gothic elements, and the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, which houses a stone altar and a frescoed crucifix.

Flavors and conviviality

True to Ciociaria tradition, the festival is accompanied by moments of conviviality featuring tastings of local dishes and products. The cuisine of Vicalvi speaks the authentic language of the Comino Valley: sagne e fagioli (pasta and beans), rustic soups, and polenta with pork ribs, accompanied by typical local products. The tasting that concludes the evening in the square is designed specifically to encourage interaction between residents and visitors.
