About Saint Barbara Fontana Liri

Every year, around the first Sunday of June, Fontana Liri gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Barbara, with three days of festivities in Piazza Trento. Religious rites and a solemn procession alternate with live music, fairground rides, and artisan stalls, while food stands host the famous Gnocchi Festival. It is the most cherished event in this town located in the Liri Valley, in the province of Frosinone.

A patronal festival in the heart of the Liri Valley

In Fontana Liri, a small town in the province of Frosinone overlooking the Liri river valley, the Saint Barbara Festival is much more than a religious observance: it is the moment when the entire community comes together. The main celebrations take place around the first Sunday of June, transforming Piazza Trento in the center of Fontana Liri Inferiore for three days into a large open-air living room filled with lights, stalls, music, and the aroma of Ciociaria cuisine.

Why Saint Barbara

The bond between Fontana Liri and Saint Barbara has deep roots. At the end of the 19th century, the Royal Army Powder Mill (now a Military Establishment) was inaugurated in the lower part of the town, around which the settlement of Fontana Liri Inferiore grew. Saint Barbara, the patron saint of artillerymen, miners, and firefighters, thus became the natural protector of a community born around gunpowder. The Church of Saint Barbara, built in 1925 and expanded in 1933, preserves her cult and remains the starting point for the rites.

The procession

The devotional heart of the festival is the solemn procession on Saturday evening, which winds through the streets of Fontana Liri Inferiore accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and the local band. It is a highly attended parade that traditionally skirts the areas linked to the military establishment, serving as a reminder of the town's industrial history. In 2026, the passage through the military area was not authorized, sparking a heated debate between the committee, citizens, and trade unions: a sign of how significant this route is to the community's identity.

Music, rides, and evenings in the square

Alongside the religious events, the organizing committee puts together a program of free evening shows in Piazza Trento every year: live concerts, cover bands, DJ sets, karaoke, and activities designed for families. There is no shortage of rides for children and adults, as well as artisan and street vendor stalls occupying the central streets for the duration of the festivities.

The Gnocchi Festival

The gastronomic aspect has become a major draw in its own right. The festival stands host the Gnocchi Festival, featuring gnocchi served in the most traditional styles of Ciociaria cuisine, starting with the classic meat sauce. Alongside the gnocchi, other local specialties are available, such as sagne e fagioli, sausage sandwiches, crespelle, and ciambelle, offering a journey through the flavors of this corner of southern Lazio.

Fontana Liri, a town of cinema and sculpture

Visitors arriving for the festival can take the opportunity to explore the village. Fontana Liri is known as the town of cinema and sculpture: Marcello Mastroianni was born here, commemorated by a plaque and a mural in the main square, and the sculptor Umberto Mastroianni also hails from the town. Three hundred panoramic steps connect Fontana Liri Inferiore to the medieval village of Fontana Liri Superiore, perched among olive groves with the remains of the Succorte castle, built around the year 1000.

A calendar of festivals

The Saint Barbara Festival in June is not the only event in town: the patron saint's cult is celebrated again on December 4th with masses, a procession, and a community lunch in the square, while the summer continues with the festival of the Madonna di Loreto at the end of July and that of Saint Paul at the end of August.

Saint Barbara Fontana Liri — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Saint Barbara Festival took place in Fontana Liri from Friday, June 5th to Sunday, June 7th, with the solemn procession on Saturday, June 6th. Three evenings in Piazza Trento featured live music, fairground rides, stalls, and the Gnocchi Festival stands, organized by the committee led by Father Pasqualino Porretta.

Saint Barbara Festival 2026

The festivities were held from Friday, June 5th to Sunday, June 7th, 2026, following the tradition that links them to the first Sunday of the month. The Saint Barbara Festival Committee was formed in the preceding months with Father Pasqualino Porretta as president, Giuseppe Greco as head of festivities, Ivano Bianchi as vice-president, and Matteo Merolle as secretary.

The contested procession

The main day was Saturday, June 6th, with the solemn procession through the streets of Fontana Liri Inferiore. However, the edition made local headlines due to the refusal of the Military Propellants Establishment to allow the parade to pass through the area: the management justified the decision citing numerous ongoing remediation activities, while the committee, citizens, and trade unions contested the choice, pointing out that the route follows defined paths far from the areas affected by the work.

Music and gnocchi in the square

During the three evenings, Piazza Trento hosted live musical performances with free admission, rides for children and adults, and artisan and street vendor stalls. The food stands featured the Gnocchi Festival, with the festival's signature dish served in its most traditional versions.
