About Saint Anthony in Marina di Aequa

Every June 13th, the seaside village of Marina di Aequa in Seiano, Vico Equense, celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua with the first sea procession of the summer in the Gulf of Naples. Following a solemn mass on the beach, the statue of the Saint is taken aboard a boat and paraded across the water, escorted by a fleet of vessels amidst sirens, horns, and the melodies of the Vico Equense Town Band. The day concludes late in the evening with fireworks over the sea, reflecting off the waves of the Sorrento Peninsula.

A promise kept on the waters of the Gulf of Naples

Every year on June 13th, the small seaside village of Marina di Aequa, nestled at the foot of the Seiano district in the municipality of Vico Equense (Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania), comes to a standstill to honor Saint Anthony of Padua. The statue of the Saint leaves the quiet of its chapel overlooking the beach and takes to the sea, followed by a fleet of boats: it is the first sea procession of the summer in the Gulf of Naples, and for the community of fishermen and sailors of the Sorrento Peninsula, it represents far more than just a date on the calendar.

The Piave Pact

The origins of the festival lie not only in popular devotion but in a specific vow. According to local lore, Commander Antonio Savarese, a young sailor sent to the Piave front during the Great War, lost an arm and made a promise: if he returned alive to his Marina d'Aequa, he would forever honor the Saint whose name he bore. Savarese survived and kept his oath; in the 1940s, he became a key figure in the port's reconstruction, using barges loaded with stone from the Scutolo quarries. Since then, the promise has been renewed annually on the water, and the festival in its current form has endured for over fifty years.

The sea procession

The heart of the day takes place in the late afternoon of June 13th. After the solemn mass celebrated directly on the beach, the statue of Saint Anthony is hoisted onto the largest boat, which sets sail followed by all the village's vessels. The procession navigates along the coastline amidst sounds, sirens, and horns, reaching the stretch of coast lined with beach clubs, while people on the shore wave as it passes. The ritual is accompanied by the notes of the Vico Equense Town Band, which marks both the processional segment on the coast and the maritime one. Many locals describe the moment as a collective blessing of the village and its sea.

Rites, incense, and blessed bread

The solemnity is prepared by a triduum of three evenings, featuring the recitation of the Holy Rosary, Holy Mass, and the traditional rite of offering incense to the Saint. On June 13th, celebrations continue throughout the day at the church of Saint Anthony in Marina di Aequa, including the blessing and distribution of bread, an ancient gesture linked to Antonian devotion and charity toward the needy. The following day, concluding masses close the liturgical cycle, and the community gathers in the small square of Saint Anthony for a moment of local conviviality.

Fireworks over the sea and flavors of the Marina

On the night of June 13th, the festival bids farewell with a fireworks display over the sea, organized by the Consorzio Marina d'Equa: the fireworks ignite above the village and reflect on the water, visible from the entire bay and the moored boats. Before and after the procession, the Marina offers local seafood specialties, from fried fish cones to calamarata pasta, accompanying an evening spent outdoors until late.
