Agra's autumn among pumpkins, chestnuts, and festive courtyards
In Agra, a tiny municipality in the Province of Varese suspended like a balcony over Lake Maggiore, the Sagra della Zucca e Castagnata is the event that celebrates autumn. A long-standing festival that every year, on the third Sunday of October, fills the historic centre with seasonal scents, flavours, and colours.
The absolute stars of the festival are pumpkins and chestnuts, featured in the food stalls:
Alongside the food, a large market with over a hundred stalls selling crafts and local products invades the village streets.
Agra's festival has a scenic soul: the historic courtyards of the village open up and come alive with artists and painters, while giant pumpkins and themed contests—from Miss Pumpkin to decorative arrangements—add a touch of fantasy to the celebration. Organised by Pro Loco Agra along with the Alpini (mountain troops association) and local associations, the event is a perfect example of how a small village can transform a sagra into an event capable of attracting visitors from all over the Varesotto region and the nearby Verbano area.
The 2026 edition, the 43rd, confirms the tradition of Agra's autumn festival, scheduled for the third Sunday of October (with a street food preview on Saturday evening). The historic centre hosts food stalls featuring pumpkin and chestnuts, the market with over a hundred stalls, and the unmissable attractions: giant pumpkins, contests, and historic courtyards enlivened by artists and painters.
Programme coming soon. Based on previous editions, the festival includes:
