Belfiore's patronal festival in honour of the Madonna della Strà, featuring roast duck and fireworks
The Sagra della Madonna della Strà, which everyone in Belfiore simply calls Sagra dell'Anara, is the most cherished event of the year for this municipality in the plain east of Verona. It is held between the end of August and the first few days of September in Piazza Carlo Lebrecht, the heart of the town, and attracts visitors from all over the eastern Veronese area.
The sagra is, first and foremost, the patronal festival in honour of the Madonna della Strà, venerated in the Romanesque sanctuary of the same name dating back to 1143. The link between the festival and Marian devotion remains alive: the concluding Monday is dedicated to liturgical celebrations, with Holy Mass at the sanctuary and, in traditional editions, the sacrament of the anointing of the sick.
The nickname "dell'Anara" comes from the festival's signature dish: duck (anara in the Venetian dialect), served roasted with polenta or in the delicious duck lasagne (lasagne con l'anara). The food stalls, housed under a large marquee covering about 500 square metres, offer these and other specialities of Veronese peasant cuisine, in a convivial atmosphere that is the true spirit of a village festival.
Each evening of the sagra is accompanied by live music, DJ sets, and themed evenings that liven up the square until late. The most anticipated moment is the grand fireworks display that closes the event: the fireworks, according to tradition, recreate the burning of the bell tower, offering a spectacular light show above the rooftops of Belfiore. The sagra is organised by the Pro Loco Belfiore, with free admission.
The 2026 edition of the Sagra della Madonna della Strà confirms the early September event in Belfiore, in the Veronese plain. The festival maintains its dual nature, religious and popular: on one hand, celebrations in honour of the Madonna della Strà at the Romanesque sanctuary of 1143, and on the other, the grand gastronomic festival in Piazza Carlo Lebrecht.
As tradition dictates, food stalls with typical duck-based dishes (roast duck with polenta and duck lasagne) are expected, along with evenings of live music and DJ sets, and the grand concluding fireworks display. The precise dates and the full schedule will be published by Pro Loco Belfiore in the weeks leading up to the festival.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition will be announced by Pro Loco Belfiore. Based on previous editions, the typical structure includes:
