The snail festival in the heart of the Sibillini Mountains
Every year, at the end of August, the village of Montefortino (province of Fermo, Marche) comes alive for the Sagra della Cucciola, one of the most deeply rooted gastronomic festivals in the Fermo hinterland. The "cucciola" is the name that the local dialect gives to snails: a humble ingredient of the peasant cuisine of the Sibillini Mountains, here transformed into a signature dish eagerly awaited by enthusiasts all year round.
The absolute protagonist is the cucciola in all its variations. The traditional menu revolves around two classics: pasta with cucciola sauce and cucciola with bread, with a strong and decisive flavor that is the hallmark of this specialty. Alongside the signature dish, the Pro Loco stands also offer grilled meats, 'pasta alla norcina' (pasta with sausage and cream), Ascolana olives, French fries, and draft beer, to satisfy even those who are trying the Sibillini cuisine for the first time.
The festival is not just about food: during the festive days, the historic center of Montefortino hosts live music with evening concerts, exhibitions dedicated to local artists and nature, horse and carriage rides, treasure hunts for children, and markets selling local products and crafts. Particularly popular are the guided excursions in the surrounding area, including night walks in the Sibillini Mountains and e-bike tours to discover the Ambro Valley and the trails of the National Park.
Included among the most picturesque villages in the Fermo area, Montefortino is a gateway to the Sibillini Mountains National Park and houses the renowned Civic Art Gallery "Fortunato Duranti". The festival is the perfect opportunity to combine a gastronomic experience with the discovery of the historic center, its alleys, and the surrounding mountain landscapes.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco of Montefortino, with the support of the Municipality and the Marche Region, and represents one of the most cherished summer events for the local community, capable of attracting visitors from outside the region as well.
The 2026 edition of the Sagra della Cucciola returns to the historic center of Montefortino (FM) starting August 28th, confirming the late summer event dedicated to the signature specialty of the Sibillini Mountains. As per established tradition, the Pro Loco's food stands are expected to offer pasta with cucciola sauce and cucciola with bread, alongside evening music, exhibitions, guided excursions, and family activities. Specific details on concerts, schedules, and side events will be announced closer to the dates.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Pro Loco of Montefortino in the weeks preceding the event. Based on the established format of recent years, the following are expected: opening of food stands with 'cucciola' (pasta with cucciola sauce and cucciola with bread) and other typical dishes, evening concerts with live music, exhibitions dedicated to the territory and local artists, horse and carriage rides, treasure hunts for children, guided excursions in the Sibillini Mountains, and e-bike tours. Precise dates and times will be communicated by the organizers.
Montefortino can be reached by car from the SS4 Salaria or from the Ascoli-Mare highway, exit Comunanza, continuing towards the Sibillini hinterland. The nearest train station is Porto San Giorgio-Fermo, from which you can continue by car or local bus.
The 2026 edition is scheduled to start on August 28th. Food stands usually open for dinner on weekdays and also for lunch on holidays.
The village is in a mountainous area: bring a warmer layer for the evenings. For guided excursions, booking with the Pro Loco is recommended. Entry to the festival is free; you only pay for what you consume at the food stands.
