The dish of Saint Lucia in the Lucanian Dolomites
In Castelmezzano, a jewel of the Lucanian Dolomites in the Province of Potenza, on December 13th, the day of Saint Lucia, a tradition passed down for over a century is renewed: the Sagra della Cuccia. The "cuccia" is an ancient, humble dish, made with grains, broad beans, chickpeas, and vetch, a symbol of peasant cuisine and the gifts of the earth, linked to devotion to the saint protector of sight.
The heart of the festival takes place in front of the Mother Church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo, where the cuccia is cooked in a large pot (cauldaro), blessed, and distributed free of charge to all the faithful at the end of Mass, as a sign of good luck and sharing. It is a simple yet powerful gesture that unites the religious dimension with the community one, and which every year draws inhabitants and visitors into the heart of the Lucanian winter.
Experiencing the Sagra della Cuccia means discovering one of the most authentic traditions of the Gallipoli Cognato and Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park, on a day when the village perched on the rocky spires gathers around its Mother Church. Amidst the aroma of cooked grains, the notes of popular devotion, and the charm of the winter landscape, Saint Lucia's festival offers a genuine and profoundly Lucanian experience.
In 2026, Castelmezzano will again, on December 13th for Saint Lucia, renew the centuries-old Sagra della Cuccia. In front of the Mother Church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo, the cuccia made of grains, broad beans, chickpeas, and vetch is cooked in the large pot, blessed, and distributed free of charge to the faithful at the end of Mass, as a gesture of good luck and sharing.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Parish and the community of Castelmezzano in the preceding days.
Based on tradition, the event typically includes:
How to get there: Castelmezzano can be reached from the SS407 Basentana, exit towards the Basento Valley, continuing along the provincial roads towards the Lucanian Dolomites.
