Theatre, music, and tradition in the historic center of Tonadico
The Sagra del Foc is the signature event of the I Mazaroi association of Tonadico, a historic hamlet in the municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Established in 2013, the festival takes its name from "foc" (fire) and is rooted in ancient pagan summer solstice rituals and the bonfires of Saint John the Baptist: propitiatory fires that, according to the rural tradition of the Primiero valleys, brought joy, light, and good fortune to the community.
For two days, the historic center of Tonadico, with its cobblestone streets and the evocative Palazzo Scopoli, transforms into a sprawling stage. The heart of the festival is theatre: itinerant performances that guide the audience through squares, courtyards, and hidden corners of the village, monologues in the local Primiero dialect, children's shows, live music, and street theatre featuring stilt walkers, jugglers, and fire performances. Everything is interspersed with gastronomic offerings based on local products and evenings under the marquee on Via Fuganti.
Founded in April 2013 by president Ornella Cavazzini, the I Mazaroi association brings together over fifty members, mostly young people, with the goal of promoting the traditions of the Primiero area, revitalizing the historic center of Tonadico, and supporting tourism through culture. The association collaborates with the Piccolo Teatro school of Milan and the Primiero music school, and also oversees the revival of the "filò", the ancient evening vigil where stories, crafts, and the collective memory of the valley were passed down.
The Sagra del Foc is designed as an intergenerational celebration: alongside the evening shows, the initiative includes a weekly theatre camp for children aged 6 to 11 and a theatre workshop for teenagers and adults aged 12 and up, which concludes with a final performance open to the public. It is a way to experience theatre not just as spectators but as protagonists, immersed in the unique atmosphere of one of the most characteristic villages in Trentino.
The Sagra del Foc 2026 returns to Tonadico on Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12, with a final segment dedicated to street theatre on Friday, July 18. Two weekends where the village fills with itinerant performances, music, and the flavors of the Primiero, under the direction of the I Mazaroi association.
