Float parade, music, and dance in the heart of the Veio Park
The Sacrofano Carnival is the most colorful winter festival in Sacrofano, a small village in the Metropolitan City of Rome, set within the Veio Regional Park in the Lazio region. Located about twenty kilometers north of the capital, the town transforms for an afternoon into an open-air stage: masks, confetti, music, and allegorical floats fill the historic center in a celebration designed for families and the entire community.
The most anticipated moment is the parade through the town streets, featuring floats and masked groups starting from the meeting point at Piazzale Madonna della Grotta and moving through the center of Sacrofano. Adults and children parade in costume, creating a festive procession that captures the genuine spirit of Lazio's village carnivals: artisanal creativity, infectious joy, and strong community participation.
After the parade, the party continues in Piazza Ugo, where the afternoon proceeds with musical entertainment and activities for children. The gastronomic tradition of the Roman and Lazio Carnival is a must: the free distribution of frappe, the crispy fried pastries dusted with powdered sugar that have always accompanied the days leading up to Lent.
The day concludes in the evening at the Teatro Alpi with the Veio Dance Winter show: a dance performance enhanced by light effects that transitions the audience from the lighthearted atmosphere of the square to a scenic indoor finale. It is this touch that distinguishes the Sacrofano Carnival from many similar festivals, uniting the public square and the stage in a single program.
The event is promoted by the municipal administration together with the Contrade Committeeโthe same association that organizes the Palio della Stella in September, the historic equestrian joust of the seven Sacrofano districtsโwith the collaboration of the Pro Loco of Sacrofano and the Veio Regional Park Authority. The involvement of the districts gives the festival strong local roots: the Carnival is, along with the Palio, one of the moments when the community comes together and gets involved.
Attending the Sacrofano Carnival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the countryside north of Rome: the medieval village gathered around the fortress, the trails of the Veio Park, and a genuine food and wine tradition, celebrated in autumn by the Wild Boar Pappardelle Festival. An ideal day trip from Rome, family-friendly and completely free of charge.
On Sunday, February 15, 2026, Sacrofano celebrated its Carnival with a full program from the early afternoon until the evening. The meeting for masks was set at 2:00 PM at Piazzale Madonna della Grotta, from where the parade through the town streets with floats and masked groups departed at 3:30 PM.
At the end of the procession, the party moved to Piazza Ugo, featuring musical entertainment, activities for children, and the traditional distribution of frappe. At 6:00 PM, the Teatro Alpi hosted the grand finale with Veio Dance Winter, a show of dance and light effects.
The 2026 edition, with free admission and open to all, was organized by the municipal administration of Sacrofano with the Contrade Committee, the Veio Regional Park Authority, and the Pro Loco of Sacrofano.
By car: from Rome, you can reach Sacrofano in about 30-40 minutes via the Via Flaminia or Via Cassia, then follow the signs for the Veio Park; parking is available near the center. By train: take the Rome-Civita Castellana-Viterbo railway (Roma Nord) and get off at Sacrofano, then take a connection to the town center.
The event is free and open to everyone: the parade, entertainment in Piazza Ugo with the distribution of frappe, and the final show at the Teatro Alpi are all free.
The streets of the center are closed to traffic during the parade: it is advisable to arrive before the early afternoon meeting time. Wear warm clothing: the festival takes place mostly outdoors in February.
