About SABIONA

SABIONA is a festival dedicated to the white wines of the Isarco Valley, held in the scenic Kapuzinergarten, the Capuchin Garden of Chiusa (Klausen), South Tyrol. For one evening, the finest white wines from wineries between Novacella Abbey, Chiusa, and the lower Isarco Valley are presented at tasting stands organized by grape variety, paired with local culinary specialties. The name pays homage to the nearby Sabiona Monastery, which towers over the town.

A tribute to the white wines of the Isarco Valley

SABIONA - Eisacktal White Wine Festival is a celebration of the excellence of white wines from the Isarco Valley, Italy's northernmost wine-growing region. The event takes place in Chiusa (Klausen), in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of Trentino-South Tyrol, and takes its name from the Sabiona Monastery (Kloster Säben), the ancient complex that overlooks the town and serves as its most iconic landmark.

The setting: the Capuchin Garden

The festival is held in the charming Kapuzinergarten, or Capuchin Garden, located at the southern end of Chiusa's historic center, near the town museum. It is an intimate and picturesque venue, perfect for an open-air tasting evening in one of South Tyrol's most distinctive artist villages.

Tasting organized by grape variety

The heart of the event is the tasting route organized by grape variety: expert sommeliers guide visitors through various tasting stands, allowing them to discover and compare the diverse expressions of white wines produced by wineries between Novacella Abbey (Kloster Neustift), Chiusa, and the lower Isarco Valley. Featured grape varieties include:

  • Müller Thurgau, fresh and aromatic
  • Grüner Veltliner and Riesling
  • Kerner and Sylvaner, true symbols of the valley
  • Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon
  • South Tyrolean sparkling wines, with a dedicated stand

Each tasting is paired with regional culinary specialties, carefully selected to enhance the wines and showcase local products.

Music and atmosphere

The evening is enlivened by live music that accompanies guests until late, turning the Capuchin Garden into a convivial open-air lounge where wine meets the food and wine culture of the Isarco Valley.

A highlight of the South Tyrolean wine spring

SABIONA is part of the South Tyrolean spring gourmet calendar and is organized by the Chiusa, Barbiano, Velturno, and Villandro Tourist Cooperative. It represents a unique opportunity to explore the viticulture of a region where mountain winemaking produces whites of great finesse, appreciated far beyond the borders of Chiusa and the province of Bolzano.
