About Ecological Sundays

Every winter, Rome Capital suspends internal combustion vehicle traffic within the Green Belt (Fascia Verde) for a series of Sundays dedicated to clean air and rediscovering the city on foot. Beyond the traffic ban, the Municipality of Rome organizes a widespread program: urban trekking with FederTrek, zero-mile farmers' markets, free guided tours, workshops for children, and anti-waste show cooking. A different and participatory way to experience the Capital.

A Sunday to breathe in Rome

The Ecological Sundays are the winter appointment through which the Municipality of Rome asks the city to pause, at least for a few hours. On the dates established by the Mayor's ordinance, the circulation of internal combustion engine vehicles is prohibited within the Green Belt (ZTL Fascia Verde), the vast area encompassing the historic center and much of the consolidated municipal territory. However, this is not just an air quality measure: Rome Capital builds a program of cultural, environmental, and sporting initiatives around the traffic ban, transforming the day into a widespread urban festival.

How the ban works

The traffic stop is typically divided into two time slots, in the morning from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM and in the afternoon from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM, with possible adjustments in case of major city events. Exemptions apply to hybrid and electric vehicles, LPG or natural gas vehicles from Euro 3 onwards, Euro 6 petrol cars, four-stroke mopeds from Euro 2, and four-stroke motorcycles from Euro 3 onwards, as well as emergency and public service vehicles. The simplest advice, however, remains: leave the car at home and get around on foot, by bicycle, or via public transport, which becomes the true protagonist on these days.

Urban walks

The participatory heart of the initiative lies in the urban walks organized with FederTrek, free itineraries that cross the Capital's neighborhoods, parks, and suburbs. Recent editions have featured routes such as "On the tracks of transhumance," from Villa Pamphilj towards the Gianicolo, the Campidoglio, the former Mattatoio, and the Pyramid of Cestius; "Rivers of Rome," from Piazza Conca d'Oro to Ponte Milvio; "Green and street art between the two banks," from the Pyramid to Parco Tevere Marconi; and "The rebel suburbs," from Porta San Paolo to Quadraro. A way to read the city slowly, intersecting archaeology, contemporary art, and popular memory.

The San Sisto Seedbed and farmers' markets

On the busiest days, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Waste Cycle opens places usually inaccessible to the public, such as the historic San Sisto Seedbed, located between Villa Celimontana and the Baths of Caracalla. Here, you can find farmers' markets featuring Cia, Coldiretti, Confagricoltura, Legacoop, and Slow Food, along with art installations, wooden games for children, environmental education workshops curated by AMA, stories of Community Urban Gardens, and anti-waste show cooking. Guided tours—to the Clivo di Villa Celimontana, the historic greenhouses, and the San Sisto vineyard—are free and do not require reservations, with staggered departures throughout the day.

A city project

The Ecological Sundays are part of Rome Capital's policies for air quality and sustainable mobility, but their strength lies in their educational and convivial approach: the administration's stated goal is to involve citizens and show how individual behavior impacts the urban environment. For those visiting the Lazio Region and its capital, happening upon the city on one of these Sundays is a rare opportunity: walking along the Forums, crossing historic neighborhoods, and reaching parks with traffic reduced to a minimum gives Rome a breath of fresh air that is hard to imagine on weekdays.

When they take place

The calendar is approved by the Capitolina Junta before winter and generally covers the period from November to March, with four or five appointments distributed between late autumn and early spring. Each date is confirmed by a specific ordinance that specifies times and any exemptions: it is always advisable to check the Municipality of Rome's official website in the days prior.

Ecological Sundays — edition 2026

In 2026, Rome's Ecological Sundays took place on January 18, February 22, and March 29, concluding the 2025-2026 winter season that began on November 9 and December 7, 2025. The program included a ban on internal combustion vehicles in the Green Belt, urban walks with FederTrek, and the extraordinary opening of the San Sisto Seedbed with farmers' markets, free guided tours, and children's workshops.

The 2025-2026 season

The calendar approved by Rome Capital included five appointments: November 9 and December 7, 2025, followed by January 18, February 22, and March 29, 2026. On each date, the circulation of internal combustion engine vehicles was prohibited in the Green Belt (ZTL Fascia Verde) from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM, with exemptions for hybrids, electrics, LPG and natural gas from Euro 3, Euro 6 petrol, four-stroke mopeds from Euro 2, and four-stroke motorcycles from Euro 3.

February 22: four urban walks

For the fourth Sunday of the season, the afternoon schedule was adjusted from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM to allow for traffic flow to the Stadio Olimpico. From 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, four free urban walks were held in collaboration with FederTrek.

March 29: the San Sisto Seedbed

The last Sunday of the season centered on the historic San Sisto Seedbed, opened free of charge to the public and accessible from the new Porta Metronia metro station.
