A night of love in the alleys of a medieval village, at the foot of Mount Etna
The Romantic Night is a national event promoted by the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy association. Every year, around the summer solstice, it simultaneously illuminates the historic centers of participating towns with a single, grand celebration dedicated to love and affection. Castiglione di Sicilia, in the Province of Catania, participates enthusiastically in this event, offering visitors an unforgettable evening of art, music, and the charm of its medieval village.
The village of Castiglione di Sicilia stands on a hill between the northern slopes of Mount Etna and the spectacular Alcantara Gorges, dominated by the ruins of a Norman castle. Narrow alleys, historic palaces, ancient churches, and panoramic views provide the perfect backdrop for a night designed for lovers and those looking to rediscover the authentic beauty of inland Sicily.
During the Romantic Night, the historic center comes alive in several spots simultaneously. The main squares host live music, performances, and themed installations, while the alleys are filled with corners set up for selfies and portraits, craft displays, and markets. There are also moments dedicated to families and children, with entertainment and balloons.
The evening is also an opportunity to visit the village's heritage: churches, museums, and monuments remain open until late, from the Basilica of the Madonna della Catena to the Church-Museum of Sant'Antonio, and the evocative Norman bell tower. At Castello di Lauria, home to the Regional Wine Shop, a sunset aperitif is held with views of Mount Etna, accompanied by live music. Local restaurants and shops offer romantic menus, tastings of Etna wines, and traditional products, thanks to the collaboration between the Municipality, Pro Loco, cultural associations, the parish, and local businesses.
The most anticipated moment arrives at the stroke of midnight, when couples and visitors gather in the square for a romantic toast and the release of balloons, a symbolic gesture that has characterized the Romantic Night across Italy for years. A poetic finale that concludes an evening capable of blending tradition, culture, and that special atmosphere only a Sicilian village can offer.
For the 2026 edition of the Romantic Night, on Saturday, June 20, Castiglione di Sicilia came alive in several squares of the historic center. In Piazza Lauria, the evening kicked off at 8:00 PM with live music by Salvatore Sanfilippo and Luisa Calanna, stations for selfies and caricatures, and a children's area with balloons; at 10:30 PM, the poetic dance performance by the duo BAAB'OrO took place, followed by the romantic midnight toast with a balloon release.
In Piazza Sant'Antonio, music was provided by Deborah Portera and Carmelo Buonarrigo, alongside the "Pronto Cupido" interactive station and a local craft market; in Piazza San Martino, there was a concert by A20 Gli Aventi and a second BAAB'OrO performance. At Castello di Lauria, home to the Regional Wine Shop, a sunset aperitif was held with views of Mount Etna and music by the band Topless. The Church-Museum of Sant'Antonio, the Basilica of the Madonna della Catena, and the Norman bell tower (entry 2 euros) remained open until late. The administration of Mayor Concetto Stagnitti introduced spaces and entertainment designed for children and families.
Castiglione di Sicilia can be reached by car from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (exit Giardini Naxos/Taormina), continuing inland along the SS185, or from the northern Etna area. The reference airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Comiso. The nearest train station is on the Circumetnea line.
The event takes place in the evening, roughly from 8:00 PM until after midnight. Participation in the event and the performances in the squares is free; some visits and refreshments (such as entry to the bell tower or menus and aperitifs in local venues) require payment.
Wear comfortable shoes for the uphill alleys of the historic center and book in advance at restaurants offering romantic menus. For information: Municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, [email protected].
