Floats and masquerades touring between Albanella and the Calore Valley
The Rocchese Carnival is one of the most popular carnival celebrations in the interior of the Salerno area: a traveling procession that, instead of staying in a single square, spends days traversing the hamlets and towns of Albanella, Castel San Lorenzo, Roccadaspide, and Serre, nestled between the Piana del Sele and the hills of the Calore Valley, in the province of Salerno, Campania. The allegorical floats set off early in the morning from the rural districts and reach the towns in the afternoon, turning streets and squares into a single open-air stage.
The structure of the festival remains consistent and has become its hallmark: it begins in the countryside, continues through neighboring towns, and concludes in the heart of the main town, in Piazza XX Settembre, where all the floats gather for the final Shrove Tuesday celebration. In between, there are kilometers of routes, stops in villages, loud music, and thousands of people following the procession on foot.
The heart of the event lies with the float builders: groups of volunteers, often linked to a single hamlet, who spend weeks in warehouses crafting structures out of papier-mรขchรฉ, iron, and polystyrene. Associations like "Carretiello in evoluzione" and "Uniti per Massano" represent their local communities, bringing animated floats, costumed groups, and choreography prepared throughout the winter to the streets. It is a collective effort that involves entire families and, more than anything else, binds together a territory made of small villages and scattered houses.
In 2026, the Rocchese Carnival took place from Sunday, February 15th, to Shrove Tuesday, February 17th, confirming its traveling format across the four municipalities. However, the stop in the center of Albanella could not take place as planned: the town's streets and squares were saturated with parked cars, leaving insufficient space for the floats to pass throughโa situation exacerbated by the fact that the municipality has lacked a municipal police force for years. The case made local headlines and became a subject of political controversy, but the traveling carnival did not stop: the Albanella floats still reached the other stops on the circuit and paraded alongside the others.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Roccadaspide in collaboration with the valley's municipalities, local associations, and float-building groups. An important role is played by the "Liberamente Donne" association, led by Elisa Coviello, and the Youth Forum coordinated by Giuseppe Gorrasi, who manage entertainment and activities for children. Coordination between the municipalities allows the same floats to travel across a very wide area, multiplying the audience and reducing costs for each individual community.
Floats, masks, music, confetti, and joy: the Rocchese Carnival is a free, open-air popular festival designed primarily for families, children, and young people. There are no grandstands or entrance tickets; you simply follow the procession as it passes, dress up, and dance in the street. The atmosphere is that of a traditional Southern Italian village festival, with associations setting up food stalls and squares filling up until late in the evening.
Albanella is a hillside town in the province of Salerno overlooking the Piana del Sele, a short distance from the archaeological site of Paestum and at the gates of the Cilento region. The carnival is one of the moments when the town connects most closely with the neighboring centers of the Calore Valley, in an area where agricultural economy and rural tradition remain clearly visible in the landscape. For those visiting Campania out of season, it is an opportunity to witness an authentic festival, far from the most crowded tourist circuits.
The 2026 Rocchese Carnival opened on Sunday, February 15th, with the gathering of allegorical floats and a traveling parade through the hamlets, continuing in the following days toward the towns. The parades touched Albanella, Castel San Lorenzo, Roccadaspide, and Serre, in the province of Salerno, with a route that linked rural districts and main squares.
The most anticipated moment was the arrival of the floats in the main town, with the celebration in Piazza XX Settembre and the Covered Market area: floats, masks, music, confetti, and joy drew thousands of people, including families, young people, and children. The local floats were joined by those from Albanella, in a procession that lasted from morning until evening.
In Albanella, the planned stop in the town center could not take place: streets and squares were saturated with parked vehicles, leaving no room for the allegorical floats to pass. The incident reignited the debate over the absence of a municipal police force in the town, a topic raised by the opposition council. The traveling carnival, however, continued regularly in the other stops on the circuit.
Sunday, February 15, 2026 โ Opening of the Rocchese Carnival: gathering of allegorical floats and traveling parade through the hamlets and districts of the Calore Valley.
Monday, February 16, 2026 โ Parades in the hamlets of Roccadaspide and a stop in Castel San Lorenzo; in the afternoon, the floats reach the main town, where those from Albanella also arrive, with a celebration in Piazza XX Settembre and the Covered Market area.
Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026 โ Final day of the circuit, with concluding stops between the involved municipalities (Albanella, Castel San Lorenzo, Roccadaspide, and Serre).
Note: the stop in the center of Albanella could not take place as planned due to the impossibility of moving the floats along streets and squares occupied by parked cars.
By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, Battipaglia exit, then SS18 and provincial roads towards Albanella and the Calore Valley. By train: reference stations on the Tyrrhenian line, including Capaccio-Roccadaspide, with onward travel by car or bus. By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport or Naples-Capodichino Airport.
Open-access street event: no tickets required.
The parades take place in February, when the weather is often cold and damp: warm clothing and comfortable shoes are essential. It is advisable to park outside the town centers, as roads are closed to traffic when the floats pass. For accommodation, the widest range of options is found between Paestum, Capaccio, and Roccadaspide.
