The allegorical float parade in the heart of the 'Town of Stars'
The Roccapalumba Carnival is one of the most cherished annual traditions in this small town in the Palermo hinterland, nestled in the Valle del Torto and known as the "Town of Stars" due to its astronomical observatory. For a few days, the streets of the center come alive with masks, confetti, and joy, offering locals and visitors alike a popular and deeply engaging event.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats, carefully crafted by local groups in the months leading up to the festival. The floats travel through the streets of Roccapalumba accompanied by costumed walking groups in a colorful procession that traditionally starts from the town center. The preparation of the floats involves a dedicated committee and numerous young volunteers, a testament to a tradition that renews itself year after year.
Beyond the parade, the program features entertainment for children, educational workshops, live music, and DJ sets to close the day with top local talent. A must-do is the tasting of traditional Carnival pastries and local gastronomic products, which accompany the festivities in a convivial atmosphere.
Organized by the municipal administration of Roccapalumba, often in collaboration with the local school district and youth groups, the Carnival is designed to involve the entire citizenry. It is an opportunity to experience the authentic spirit of the festival in the squares and streets of the town, away from the major tourist circuits but with all the warmth of the Sicilian tradition.
The event takes place in the historic center of Roccapalumba, in the province of Palermo, during the Carnival period (February-March). Admission to the parades and street events is free.
