Floats and masquerades through the hamlets of the Calore Valley
The Roccadaspide Carnival is the most anticipated winter event in Roccadaspide, a town of just over seven thousand residents overlooking the Calore Valley in the province of Salerno, at the gateway to the Cilento region and a short distance from the archaeological site of Paestum. This is not a postcard-perfect carnival or an event manufactured for mass tourism; it is a genuine local festival born from the hard work of float builders and associations, which every year mobilizes the entire territory for three days of parades, music, and masks.
Everything revolves around the allegorical floats, built in the months leading up to the event inside sheds and garages across the hamlets. Papier-mâché, iron structures, vibrant colors, and artisanal mechanisms take shape through a collective effort that brings together veteran builders and newcomers. This passing of skills—from the elders to the very young—ensures the continuity of the event: each group takes its float to the streets, accompanied by a procession of costumed performers, masked groups, and loud music.
The unique feature of the Roccadaspide Carnival is its itinerant nature. Roccadaspide is a scattered municipality, with numerous hamlets spread across hills and countryside—Carretiello, Massano, Fonte, Serra, Doglie, Tempalta, Ecoli, Cavalli—and the caravan of floats reaches them one by one, turning country roads and small squares into improvised stages. In recent editions, the parade has crossed municipal borders, reaching Albanella, Castel San Lorenzo, and Serre: a widespread carnival that involves multiple towns in the same valley and multiplies the audience along the entire route.
The most awaited moment remains the return to the main town. On the final afternoon, the floats head back toward the historic center of Roccadaspide and converge in Piazza XX Settembre, where the final party takes place: music, confetti, dancing, and thousands of people in masks filling the square until evening. The parades are complemented by events designed especially for children, such as the morning party hosted at the Covered Market, featuring entertainment, carnival sweets, and games for families.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Roccadaspide together with local associations. In recent years, a central role has been played by the Liberamente Donne association and the Youth Forum, supported by the float-building groups from the hamlets, including Carretiello in Evoluzione and Uniti per Massano. It is a typically Southern Italian organizational model, based on volunteering and self-funding, which also explains why the event is free of charge.
Roccadaspide dominates the valley from atop its medieval castle and is known throughout Campania for its chestnuts and a still-vibrant agricultural tradition. The carnival is part of a calendar of popular festivals that marks the local year and represents a homecoming occasion for many emigrants and residents of neighboring towns. Those arriving from outside the region will find an authentic carnival here, very different from the major national events: no grandstands or tickets, but the chance to walk alongside the floats, join the procession, and experience the festival from the inside.
Three days of celebration, from February 15 to 17, 2026, for an edition that confirmed the widespread formula of the Roccadaspide Carnival: the allegorical floats were not limited to the main town, but traveled through the hamlets of Roccadaspide and reached the municipalities of Albanella, Castel San Lorenzo, and Serre, in the province of Salerno.
The caravan set off early in the morning, followed by hundreds of masks, and enlivened the streets of the hamlets before reaching Castel San Lorenzo; in the afternoon, the return to Roccadaspide brought the party to Piazza XX Settembre, amidst music, confetti, and masked groups. In the morning, a party was also held at the Covered Market, designed especially for children and families.
The organization was managed by the Municipality of Roccadaspide together with the Liberamente Donne association and the Youth Forum, with the decisive contribution of the local float-building associations. Once again this year, the event was completely free.
The 2026 Roccadaspide Carnival spanned three days, from Sunday, February 15 to Tuesday, February 17 (Shrove Tuesday), with parades distributed between Roccadaspide and neighboring towns.
The detailed program with times and itineraries is released by the Municipality in the days immediately preceding the event.
By car — Roccadaspide can be reached from the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway (Battipaglia or Sicignano degli Alburni exit), continuing along the Strada Statale 166 degli Alburni towards the Calore Valley. The journey from Salerno takes about an hour.
By train — the nearest stations are Battipaglia and Capaccio-Roccadaspide, on the Salerno–Reggio Calabria line; from there, you must continue by bus or car.
By plane — Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport (approx. 60 km) and Naples-Capodichino Airport (approx. 120 km).
During the parade days, several streets in the center and the hamlets are closed to traffic. It is recommended to park in areas outside the town center and reach Piazza XX Settembre on foot.
Participation is free: parades and square parties take place on public land, and no tickets are required.
Roccadaspide and neighboring towns offer farmhouses (agriturismi), B&Bs, and holiday homes; the Cilento coast and Paestum, half an hour away by car, offer a much wider selection. Be sure to try local products: the Roccadaspide PGI chestnut, local valley cheeses, and typical seasonal sweets like chiacchiere and sanguinaccio.
