Free organ concerts in the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, nestled in the Lepini Mountains
The International Organ Festival in Rocca Massima is one of the longest-running and most unique musical events in the province of Latina, in the Lazio region. Each summer, for several evenings between late July and mid-September, the small Church of San Michele Arcangelo fills with residents, vacationers, and enthusiasts from outside the region, all gathered to hear world-class organists. Perched on the Lepini Mountains at over 700 meters above sea level, the town is the highest in the province; on summer evenings, the air is crisp and the view stretches all the way to the sea, making the journey up a reward in itself.
Everything revolves around the instrument. In 1999, the parish church welcomed a mechanical organ built by the historic Inzoli di Pacifico dei F.lli Bonizzi firm from Crema, inaugurated in October of that year. With its 1,163 pipes, the organ is considered one of the finest instruments in the area and inspired the first edition of the festival the following year. Since then, the event has never stopped, reaching its twenty-seventh edition in 2026 under the artistic direction of Gabriele Pizzuti.
The formula has remained simple and consistent for over twenty years: a few well-spaced concerts, each entrusted to a different soloist, almost always from a different country. In recent years, organists have arrived from England, South Africa, France, Lithuania, Spain, Germany, Ukraine, and South Korea, alongside Italian performers. The programs span centuries and different schools:
The result is a journey that the organizers aptly describe as «a musical voyage across continents and centuries», allowing even those unfamiliar with organ repertoire to easily find their way.
Concerts typically begin at 9:30 PM, once the heat of the day has faded. The church is intimate, which is part of the festival's charm: you listen up close, without amplification, enjoying the natural acoustics of the nave. Admission is completely free for all evenings, with no reservations or tickets required, a tradition the Pro Loco has always maintained. However, it is advisable to arrive early for the most anticipated dates, as seating is limited.
The festival is promoted by the Pro Loco APS Association of Rocca Massima in collaboration with the Parish of San Michele Arcangelo, with the support of the Municipality. It is a volunteer-led effort that has built significant credibility in the European organ circuit over the years, to the point that Rocca Massima is now cited as one of the «summer capitals of sacred music» in southern Lazio.
Rocca Massima is worth reaching a few hours early. The historic center is a small maze of stone alleys dominated by the ruins of the castle; from the viewpoint, your gaze sweeps over the Pontine plain and, on clear days, all the way to the islands. The Lepini territory is known for its extra virgin olive oil, cheeses, and the rustic cuisine of local trattorias: a dinner before the concert perfectly rounds off the evening.
The 2026 edition of the festival, the twenty-seventh, spans nearly two months, from late July to mid-September. The artistic direction is entrusted, as always, to Gabriele Pizzuti; the organization is handled by the Pro Loco APS of Rocca Massima in collaboration with the Parish of San Michele Arcangelo.
The program brings together five soloists of five different nationalities, from the young Roman school to German conservatories, passing through Spain, Ukraine, and South Korea. The common thread remains the ancient and Baroque repertoire, enriched by Romantic and 20th-century incursions that showcase the capabilities of the 1999 Bonizzi-Inzoli organ and its 1,163 pipes.
As per tradition, admission to all concerts is completely free and the evenings begin at 9:30 PM.
All concerts are held in the Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Rocca Massima. The program is as released by the Pro Loco: any updates will be published on the association's website.
Church of San Michele Arcangelo, historic center of Rocca Massima (LT), Lazio.
By car: take the Valmontone exit on the A1 motorway or via Latina/Cisterna di Latina, then follow the provincial road toward the Lepini Mountains. The most convenient train stations are Latina and Cisterna di Latina, but the final leg to the village requires a car or taxi: the town is located at over 700 meters above sea level and is not served by trains.
Concerts begin at 9:30 PM. Admission is completely free, no reservation required. Seating in the church is limited: it is best to arrive 20-30 minutes early.
Even in mid-summer, evenings at this altitude can be cool: bring a sweater. The historic center is pedestrian-only, with hills and stone paving, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Park outside the walls and walk up.
