About Saint Leonard Festival in Tufo

Every year in mid-August, the hillside village of Tufo di Minturno gathers to celebrate its patron saint, Saint Leonard Abbot. For a few days, the narrow streets and Piazza San Leonardo come alive with festive lights, market stalls, and music, featuring solemn masses, a procession accompanied by a brass orchestra, evening shows, and a grand fireworks finale. It is an authentic village celebration, deeply cherished by residents and returning emigrants alike, in the heart of the Latina province.

A patronal feast in the heart of the Minturno hills

The Saint Leonard Abbot Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Tufo, a small hillside hamlet in the Municipality of Minturno, located in the southern Lazio region. Every summer, around mid-August, the village is transformed: festive lights line the alleys, Piazza San Leonardo becomes the hub of community life, and the parish church dedicated to the saint returns to being the center of a devotion passed down through generations.

Saint Leonard, patron of Tufo

Saint Leonard Abbot, a Frankish monk who lived between the 5th and 6th centuries, is venerated as the protector of prisoners and those in difficulty. His devotion is widespread throughout Southern Italy, and in Tufo, it has taken deep roots: the parish bears his name, as does the village's main square, and the patronal feast has always marked the hamlet's summer calendar.

It is worth noting that another celebration dedicated to the saint exists in Minturno, in the hamlet of Tremensuoli, where Saint Leonard is celebrated alongside Saint Sebastian in the preceding days: two distinct events, both expressions of the dense network of religious festivals that characterizes the Minturno area.

How the festival unfolds

The structure of the festival follows the classic pattern of patronal feasts in the Lower Lazio region, with religious and secular elements intertwining over several days:

  • Religious Rites โ€” novena, solemn masses, and celebrations in the parish church of Saint Leonard Abbot;
  • Procession โ€” the most attended moment: the statue of the saint travels through the village streets accompanied by the "Giuseppe Pepenella" Brass Orchestra, a band historically linked to the festivities in Tufo;
  • Evening Shows โ€” pop music concerts, theatrical performances, and entertainment in the square, with guests who have included well-known names from the Italian music scene over the years;
  • Fireworks โ€” the final pyrotechnic display, a traditional closing to the festival, visible from the surrounding hills;
  • Food Stands and Stalls โ€” featuring the flavors of local cuisine from the Gulf of Gaeta and the Aurunci hinterland.

A village that reunites

Like many festivals in the hillside hamlets of Minturno, the Saint Leonard celebration has a value that goes beyond the program: it is the occasion when the village repopulates. Families who have moved away return for the festival days, houses are reopened, and long tables are set. For those visiting the Gulf of Gaeta in August, attending one of these festivals means encountering a Southern Italy still tied to its community rhythms, just a few kilometers from the crowded beaches of Scauri and Marina di Minturno.

Tufo and the Minturno area

Tufo is one of the hamlets dotting the hills behind Minturno, in a landscape of olive groves and vineyards sloping down toward the mouth of the Garigliano river. The Municipality of Minturno, which preserves the impressive Minturnae archaeological site with its Roman theater, dedicates every summer to the "Minturno Scauri" festival, a calendar of events that complements the religious feasts of the hamlets with shows, concerts, and guided tours. In the summer of 2026, the traveling caravan Borghi in festa is scheduled to stop right in Piazza San Leonardo in Tufo, confirming the village's central role in the municipal summer program.
