About Rivisondoli Living Nativity

The Rivisondoli Living Nativity, located in the province of L'Aquila, is the oldest living nativity scene in Italy after Greccio. Since 1951, every January 5th, on the eve of Epiphany, the Piana di Piè Lucente is transformed into a vast, open-air Bethlehem. Hundreds of participants, fourteen living tableaux, bagpipes, torches, and fireworks bring to life one of Abruzzo's most evocative sacred representations, drawing thousands of spectators from across Italy.

Italy's oldest living nativity

In the heart of the Cinquemiglia Plateau, in the small mountain village of Rivisondoli in Abruzzo, one of the most beloved Christmas traditions in the country is renewed every year. The Rivisondoli Living Nativity is considered the oldest of its kind in Italy after Greccio. Its history began in 1951, when the community sought to transform the Nativity into a collective message of peace, hope, and rebirth in the difficult post-war climate. Since then, the performance has continued uninterrupted, passed down from generation to generation with the same original devotion.

Piana di Piè Lucente becomes Bethlehem

Every January 5th, on the eve of Epiphany, the vast Piana di Piè Lucente at the foot of the village transforms into a grand, snow-covered natural stage. The mountain basin, illuminated by torches and bonfires, welcomes hundreds of costumed participants who reenact the entire Nativity story. The sacred representation is divided into fourteen living tableaux that trace the most important moments of the sacred history, from the Annunciation to the birth of Jesus, accompanied by the sound of bagpipes, traditional carols, and a fireworks display that closes the evening over the plain.

A community-wide tradition

The Rivisondoli nativity is a deeply participatory event that defines the local identity. The Baby Jesus is traditionally played by the village's most recent newborn, while the Madonnina (Virgin Mary) is chosen every year on December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. She is entrusted with the blue veil passed down since 1951, a symbol of memory, faith, and continuity. Alongside Saint Joseph, the hut angel, the Annunciation angel, and the Three Wise Men, shepherds, artisans, and extras of all ages parade in an intergenerational blend that involves the entire village and neighboring towns.

A beloved event throughout Abruzzo

Recognized as one of Italy's most beautiful living nativities and promoted by the Abruzzo Tourism portal, the event attracts thousands of visitors each year—often over five thousand—who brave the cold and occasional snow of the Cinquemiglia Plateau to witness a performance of profound spiritual and scenic value. Admission is free. Organized with the support of the Municipality of Rivisondoli, the nativity is now a symbol of the Abruzzese Christmas and a cornerstone of the region's religious and popular traditions.

Rivisondoli Living Nativity — edition 2026

The 75th edition of the Rivisondoli Living Nativity took place on January 5, 2026, in the Piana di Piè Lucente, drawing over five thousand spectators despite the bad weather. Fourteen living tableaux, directed by Geppy Lepore with narration by Luca Ward, accompanied the sacred performance amidst bagpipes, torches, and fireworks.

The 75th edition

On January 5, 2026, Rivisondoli celebrated the 75th edition of its historic living nativity, the oldest in Italy after Greccio. Despite the rain, over five thousand spectators reached the Piana di Piè Lucente to witness the fourteen living tableaux that, scene by scene, told the story of the Nativity. The direction was signed by artistic director Geppy Lepore, with costumes curated by Patrizia Ferrara and the voice of actor and voice-over artist Luca Ward as narrator. The role of the Madonnina was played by sixteen-year-old Maria Stella Ferrara, a student from Castel di Sangro with roots in Rivisondoli. The evening opened with Holy Mass in the church of San Nicola di Bari and concluded, as per tradition, with songs dedicated to the Baby Jesus, torches at the foot of the hut, and fireworks over the plain.
