About Riti di Fuoco

Every December, around the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the historic center of Lioni comes alive with Riti di Fuoco. Traditional Irpinian bonfires are transformed into stunning scenic installations, while alleys and squares host street performances, folk masks, concerts, workshops, and food stalls. Promoted by the Pro Loco Lioni and the local municipality, the event was established in 2018 and has quickly become one of the most iconic cultural highlights in the province of Avellino, blending devotion, collective memory, and artistic exploration.

Riti di Fuoco: when Lioni lights up for the Immaculate Conception

Every year, in the days leading up to and surrounding the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the historic center of Lioni—a town in the upper Ofanto valley, in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Irpinia and inland Campania—transforms into an open-air stage. Riti di Fuoco (Fire Rites) was born from a simple, ancient gesture: lighting a bonfire on a December night. Around this act, the Pro Loco Lioni and the local government have built a multi-day event that combines ritual, live performance, folk music, and local cuisine.

An ancient devotion: the Madonna de lo Fuoco

The common thread of the event is the popular devotion known in Lioni as la Madonna de lo Fuoco. In local tradition, the fires lit for the Immaculate Conception are not merely decorative: they are an act of devotion and community, a way to illuminate the darkest night of the year and bring people together. The festival preserves this dimension, with the blessing and lighting of the bonfire and the floral tribute to the statue of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th, while pairing it with a contemporary interpretation of the ritual.

Bonfires as art installations

The hallmark of Riti di Fuoco lies right here: the bonfires take on artistic shapes, turning into luminous installations and scenic works capable of telling stories of folklore and shared memory. Braziers, woodpiles, and light displays map out a path through the village, where the public moves from one square to another, following the rhythm of the shows. There is no single stage; the entire city is the performance space.

Music, theater, and folk masks

The program is multidisciplinary and changes every year. Past editions have featured:

  • folk and traditional music concerts, with bands from the Campania and Irpinia traditions;
  • itinerant shows, jugglers, street performers, and fire-based performances;
  • masks and rituals from other Southern regions, hosted as a dialogue between popular cultures;
  • theater, storytelling, and monologues, including those in the local Lioni dialect;
  • exhibitions and guided tours of the Territorial Ethnographic Museum (M.E.T.) and the Casale Leonum;
  • excursions in the Picentini Mountains and walks around the local area.

The taste of Irpinia

Along Corso Umberto I and in the squares, food stalls offer typical Irpinian products: rustic peasant dishes, local cured meats and cheeses, traditional sweets, and the great wines of the Avellino province. The gastronomic aspect is an integral part of the ritual: people eat and drink around the fire, just as they have always done in these communities of the Campanian Apennines.

A festival that has grown since 2018

The first edition of Riti di Fuoco dates back to 2018, with the stated goal of reviving the bonfires of the Immaculate Conception. Since then, the event has grown year by year, extending to four days and becoming a cultural benchmark for the entire region. The 2025 edition took place from December 5th to 8th with a particularly rich program of concerts, theater, exhibitions, and excursions.

Why it's worth the trip

Those who arrive in Lioni during these days won't just find a simple town festival, but an experiential journey: the chill of the Apennines, the warmth of the braziers, the sound of tammorre drums and brass bands, and the illuminated alleys. It is a precious opportunity to understand how inland Campania experiences its winter, far from the tourist routes of the coast, and to discover an Irpinia made of small villages, forests, and peasant memory.
