The high-altitude mountain running race in Val Germanasca, from Ghigo di Prali to the Rifugio Lago Verde
The Rifugio Lago Verde Alpine Race is an individual high-altitude mountain running competition held in Ghigo di Prali, a village in the municipality of Prali, in the heart of the upper Val Germanasca (Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont). Established just a few years ago, it has already become a beloved event for those seeking an authentic trail experience, immersed in the rugged and spectacular scenery of the Cottian Alps.
The course measures 31 km with 2,100 meters of elevation gain and runs almost entirely on trails and dirt roads. What makes it unique is the time spent at high altitude: over 20 km are run at an altitude above 2,000 meters above sea level, reaching the Rifugio Lago Verde (Rifugio Severino Bessone, 2,583 m), owned by the C.A.I. Val Germanasca section. Despite the challenge, the organizers emphasize that the route is suitable for runners who are not mountain specialists, provided they are well-trained.
The event is managed through a unique collaboration between the C.A.I. Val Germanasca Section, the A.S.D. Gruppo Sportivo Pomaretto '80, and the "Amici Team Nuovi Traguardi" Technical Group, with the support of the Municipality of Prali and numerous volunteers who staff the aid stations along the route. The race awards 2 ITRA points and complies with Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc standards.
Beyond the competitive event, the day is a celebration for the entire Prali community and mountain enthusiasts. In recent years, a Mini Race for children has been introduced, and the organization strongly promotes environmental respect through the "I don't throw my trash" campaign. Running the Alpine Race means traversing alpine pastures, lakes, and some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Waldensian valleys, in a corner of Piedmont still little known to the general public.
The 4th edition of the Rifugio Lago Verde Alpine Race is scheduled for Sunday, August 2, 2026, in Ghigo di Prali, in the upper Val Germanasca. The route remains the classic one: 31 km with 2,100 m of elevation gain, almost entirely on trails and dirt roads, with over 20 km above 2,000 meters altitude up to the Rifugio Lago Verde. Registration opens on February 6, 2026, on the WedoSport platform. The race awards 2 ITRA points and is valid for the Rifugio Lago Verde Trophy, both individual and team.
