About Cingoli 1848

Every third weekend of July, Cingoli, in the heart of the province of Macerata, travels back in time to the 19th century. The Rievocazione Storica Cingoli 1848, accompanied by the Palio Castrvm Cingvli, fills the historic centre with period costumes, 19th-century dances, popular games, and food stalls. The heart of the festival is the challenge between the three terzieri — San Giovanni, San Nicolò, and Santa Maria — who compete for the palio with the grand historical procession and the spectacular Corsa delle Botti (Barrel Race).

Cingoli returns to the 19th century

For an entire weekend in July, the village of Cingoli, in the heart of the province of Macerata and the Marche region, abandons the present and immerses itself in the atmosphere of the 19th century. The Rievocazione Storica Cingoli 1848 is one of the most cherished historical reenactment events in the Macerata area: participants in period costumes bring alleys and squares to life, including city authorities, commoners, and nobles who revive the customs, trades, and atmospheres of the 19th century.

A tradition born in 1987

The event was born in 1987 and is now in its thirty-seventh edition, organized by the Associazione Rievocazione Storica Cingoli 1848, whose mission is to research and promote the peculiarities of the 19th century through reenactment. Over the years, the event has been enriched by the Palio Castrvm Cingvli, which in 2026 will reach its fourteenth edition, transforming the festival into a true competition between the city's three terzieri.

The three terzieri

The competitive heart of the reenactment is the challenge between the three terzieri into which the Cingoli territory is ideally divided:

  • Terziere San Giovanni — includes the districts of Colognola, Valcarecce, Mummuiola, and others;
  • Terziere San Nicolò — brings together Tavignano, San Vittore, Cervidone, and other districts;
  • Terziere Santa Maria — with Campo di Bove, Botontano, Grottaccia, and other hamlets.

The three terzieri compete in popular historical games and, above all, in the famous Corsa delle Botti (Barrel Race), a spectacular event that determines the winner of the palio.

What to experience during the festival

Three days marked by events that blend spectacle, history, and conviviality: the grand historical procession that winds through the centre with hundreds of costumed participants, the Corsa delle Botti (Barrel Race), the popular historical games in Piazzale Cipolloni, the inauguration of exhibitions dedicated to 19th-century life, peasant evenings, and the elegant gala evening with period dances in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. There are also food stalls, with the traditional "Ristoro di Santa Maria," to accompany the festival with local flavours.

Why it's worth it

Cingoli, nicknamed "the Balcony of the Marche" for its panoramic position, offers an ideal setting for this reenactment: a historic village that transforms, for a weekend, into an open-air stage where the entire community passionately and meticulously reenacts its 19th-century roots.
