About Renaissance Festival Montecuccolo

In the evocative setting of Montecuccolo Castle, an ancient manor perched on the Modenese Apennines, La Corte dei Montecuccoli takes you back in time to the Renaissance. Flag-wavers, historical dances, 17th-century music, ancient craft stalls, and manor cuisine animate the panoramic terrace and courtyards of the fortress for an entire day, in Pavullo nel Frignano, province of Modena.

A Dive into the Renaissance on the Modenese Apennines

The Renaissance Festival at Montecuccolo Castle is the re-enactment that annually transforms the ancient manor of Pavullo nel Frignano, in the province of Modena, into a vibrant and lively Renaissance court. Organized by the historical re-enactment group La Corte dei Montecuccoli, with the collaboration of the Terra e Identitร  association and the Pro Loco of Pavullo, the festival brings ladies and knights, forgotten crafts, ancient music, and the flavors of yesteryear's tables within the fortress walls.

Montecuccolo Castle, an Exceptional Setting

Montecuccolo Castle is one of the most fascinating manors in the Modenese Apennines: perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Frignano valley, it was for centuries the heart of the domain of the noble Montecuccoli family, which gave birth to the famous general Raimondo Montecuccoli. Today, the fortified village, with its museum and panoramic terrace, provides the perfect backdrop for a re-enactment that blends history, entertainment, and popular tradition.

What to Experience at the Festival

Throughout the day, the courtyards and walkways of the castle are filled with historical stands and stalls that recount the life and crafts of the Renaissance court:

  • the flag-wavers with their choreographies of flags thrown to the sky;
  • the historical dances in vogue during the Renaissance, performed by court characters;
  • live ancient music, with popular 17th-century pieces;
  • the craft stalls: the Gufi Mill, the chess game, the court herbalist with beauty secrets, the balsamic vinegar exhibition, the honey corner, and bread-making according to ancient recipes;
  • the more mysterious corners, such as the 'antro dei misteri' (cave of mysteries) and the 'porta delle fate' (gate of the fairies), also designed for the little ones.

The Manor's Table

The food and wine aspect, a real strong point of the festival, is not to be missed. The Pro Loco of Pavullo offers borlenghi and crescentine, symbols of Apennine cuisine, while La Tavola del Maniero, the castle's historical restaurant, serves dishes inspired by Renaissance recipes accompanied by hydromel and hippocras, the spiced drinks beloved at court. An opportunity to discover the flavors of Frignano in a unique setting.

A Young but Growing Tradition

Born in 2024, the Renaissance Festival has quickly become one of the most anticipated events of the Pavullo summer, with a program that grows with each edition, including themed conferences, concerts, evening shows, and scenic illuminations of the castle terrace.

Renaissance Festival Montecuccolo โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Renaissance Festival at Montecuccolo Castle is scheduled for the weekend of August 8th and 9th, as part of the official Pavullo'26 summer program. Two days of re-enactment featuring flag-wavers, historical dances, ancient music, and the flavors of the manor's table, set against the backdrop of the ancient Frignano castle.

The Renaissance Festival at Montecuccolo Castle returns in 2026 on the weekend of August 8th and 9th, confirmed in the official Pavullo'26 calendar of the Municipality of Pavullo nel Frignano. Against the backdrop of the ancient Frignano manor, La Corte dei Montecuccoli renews the re-enactment with shows, dances, historical crafts, and period cuisine.

The detailed program for the 2026 edition, with times and guests, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event. Following the pattern of past editions, expect flag-wavers, Renaissance dances, ancient music concerts, historical craft stalls (Gufi Mill, balsamic vinegar, herbalist, honey, bread-making), and food stands with borlenghi, crescentine, and dishes from La Tavola del Maniero.
