High-seas sailing in the waters of Cefalù
The Regata dei Borghi più belli d'Italia is one of the most anticipated events of the Sicilian sailing season, taking place in the waters of Cefalù, a jewel of the Tyrrhenian coast in the Province of Palermo, Sicily. For several years, this event has become an unmissable classic, successfully combining competitive offshore sailing with the promotion of one of the Mediterranean's most scenic villages, dominated by its famous Rocca and the UNESCO-listed Norman Cathedral.
The regatta is organized by the Municipality of Cefalù in partnership with the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) and a wide network of sailing clubs: the Lega Navale of Palermo, the Lega Navale of Termini Imerese, the Velaclub Cefalù, and the Velaclub Termini Imerese. This collaboration makes the event a collective effort that brings together sailing enthusiasts from the entire northern coast of the island.
Registered vessels compete in three categories, designed to accommodate both highly competitive racers and crews who view sailing as a social passion:
The races span several days and cover a stretch of coastline of great beauty. It begins with a coastal regatta from Termini Imerese to Cefalù, followed by a buoy race in the waters facing the city's promenade; the competition concludes with a coastal regatta from Cefalù to the Castello di Roccella, heading towards Campofelice di Roccella. The proximity of the race courses to the shore allows the public to follow the maneuvers comfortably from land, along Cefalù's famous promenade.
Beyond the sporting dimension, the Regata dei Borghi più belli d'Italia is an occasion for meeting and celebration: at the end of the races, crews gather for social moments, including pasta parties and award ceremonies, in an atmosphere that makes sailing a vehicle for integration and discovery of the region. The event thus celebrates the deep bond between the sea, sport, and the most beautiful villages of Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Regata dei Borghi più belli d'Italia brought 25 vessels to Cefalù, divided into the Crociera Regata, Gran Crociera Veleggiata, and FIV/ORC Light categories. Among the participants was the renowned Olympic sailor Ganga Bruni.
The vessels were welcomed in Termini Imerese on Friday, June 19, for registration and measurement checks. On Saturday, June 20, after the 9:00 AM skippers' briefing, the Termini Imerese-Cefalù coastal regatta started at 10:55 AM, followed at 4:30 PM by the buoy race in front of the promenade; in the evening, at 7:00 PM, the official ceremony with the awards took place. On Sunday, June 21, at 10:55 AM, the final race: the coastal regatta from Cefalù to the Castello di Roccella.
Cefalù is easily accessible by train (Palermo-Messina line, Cefalù station is just a short walk from the historic center and the promenade) and by car via the A20 Palermo-Messina motorway, taking the Cefalù exit. The nearest airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi, about an hour away.
The race courses are positioned close to the coast: it is possible to watch the races directly from the Cefalù promenade and from the panoramic areas overlooking the sea, without the need to board a boat.
The event takes place in the height of the summer season: it is advisable to book accommodation in the village well in advance and take advantage of the day to visit the Norman Cathedral and hike up to the Rocca di Cefalù.
