Allegorical floats, costumes, and tradition in the heart of the Agrigento region
The Ravanusa Historical Carnival is the most anticipated winter event in Ravanusa, a town in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. Designated by the Ministry of Culture as one of Italy's Historical Carnivals, this recognition honors the artistic quality of the creations and the local craftsmanship. For several days, the town center—from the central Piazza 1 Maggio along the main streets—comes alive with floats, masks, music, and festive crowds.
The history of the Ravanusa Carnival began in 1983, when a group of friends brought a float to Camastra. After placing third, they decided to parade it through the streets of Ravanusa, sparking a tradition that continues today. Since then, the event has grown into one of the most important highlights of the Sicilian Carnival, attracting visitors from across the island and beyond.
The heart of the festival lies in the papier-mâché allegorical floats, authentic moving works of art created by young master artisans working in associations. Each float explores satirical themes related to politics and social issues, with an increasing focus on the environment, sustainability, and community. The floats parade accompanied by costumed groups, choreography, music, and plenty of wit.
Admission to the main events is free, and the municipal administration strengthens security measures every year to ensure a safe celebration for all. The Ravanusa Historical Carnival remains an unmissable appointment for those wanting to experience the authentic joy of the Sicilian Carnival in the heart of the Agrigento province.
The 38th edition of the Ravanusa Historical Carnival took place from February 13 to 17, 2026, confirming the event's status among the Historical Carnivals recognized by the Ministry of Culture. For five days, Ravanusa was brought to life by allegorical floats, costumed groups, music, DJ sets, and tastings of local flavors.
The program combined spectacular moments, such as the Red Carpet with Brazilian and Cuban dancers, with music and dance evenings, culminating in the open-air disco on Shrove Tuesday. There was a strong focus on environmental themes, with the "Green Ocean" parade created by students from the Manzoni Comprehensive Institute. Admission to the main events was free.
Ravanusa is located in the southeastern part of the province of Agrigento. By car, it can be reached via the SS115 and the provincial roads connecting Licata, Campobello di Licata, and Canicattì. The nearest train station is in Canicattì, from where you can continue by bus or car.
During the parades, the center is closed to traffic: it is recommended to park in areas outside the historic center and walk to Piazza 1 Maggio and the parade route.
The main events have free admission. Comfortable clothing is recommended, and for those traveling with children, check the daily program for dedicated activities. Don't miss the totomè, the typical sweets of the Ravanusa Carnival.
