The vintage car rally through the hills of the Asti Monferrato
The Rally Il Grappolo Storico is the most anticipated automotive race of the spring in San Damiano d'Asti, in the Province of Asti, Piedmont. Organized by the A.S.D. San Damiano Rally Club, the event is dedicated to vintage cars and every year takes motorsport enthusiasts through the hills of the Asti Monferrato, a land of great wines and winding roads perfect for rallying. The name itself, "Il Grappolo" (The Grape Cluster), reflects the winemaking identity of this corner of Piedmont.
The event features vintage rally cars, with dedicated rankings for historic cars, the Classic category (cars built between 1993 and 2000), and historic regularity cars, the latter competing in a parallel race. Iconic models such as the Subaru Legacy, Lancia Delta Integrale, BMW M3, and Renault Clio Maxi race along the Asti roads—true motorsport legends that delight spectators trackside.
The rally unfolds over special stages touching San Damiano d'Asti and the neighboring municipalities of Ferrere and Costigliole d'Asti. The shakedown takes place in the San Luigi hamlet, while the "San Grato," "Ferrere," and "Costigliole d'Asti" special stages carve out a challenging route through villages, country roads, and rows of vines. Piazza Libertà in San Damiano hosts the start and finish, while the service park and overnight park bring the town center to life.
The Grappolo Storico is a high-level race included in important national and regional series: it is valid for the Trofeo Rally di Zona, the Michelin Storico, and the Memory Fornaca, the challenge that brings together the most prestigious historic car races in the Piedmont area. This makes the event a must-attend for drivers chasing category titles.
Beyond the competition, the Grappolo Storico is a celebration for the entire community of San Damiano d'Asti and the involved Asti municipalities. Spectators gather along the special stages and in the squares, in a climate of passion for motors that blends with the typical hospitality of the Monferrato. It is the ideal opportunity to discover a territory made of hills, wineries, and traditions, experiencing the thrill of historic cars in action up close.
The 6th edition of the Rally Il Grappolo Storico saw 112 crews at the start, confirming the growth of an event that is now a staple of the Piedmontese historic car calendar. Organized by the San Damiano Rally Club, the race was held between Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, 2026, and was valid for the Trofeo Rally di Zona, the Michelin Storico, and the Memory Fornaca.
The special stages wound through San Damiano d'Asti, Ferrere, and Costigliole d'Asti, with spectacular action that saw historic vehicles challenge each other on the roads of the Asti Monferrato. The start and finish took place in Piazza Libertà, the heart of the town.
The race included rankings for historic cars, the Classic category (1993-2000 cars), and historic regularity cars.
Emanuele Franco and Flavio Aivano took the lead in the general classification in their Subaru Legacy, finishing just tenths of a second ahead of their pursuers. Also on the podium were Giuseppe and Federica Collura in a Lancia Delta Integrale. In the Classic category, Sergio Mano and Vittorio Bianco stood out in their Renault Clio Maxi. Among the 112 crews at the start, the BMW M3s in the race also provided a great show.
San Damiano d'Asti can be reached by car from the A21 Turin-Piacenza motorway (Asti exits) and the network of provincial roads in the Asti area. The San Damiano d'Asti train station is served by the Turin-Asti-Genoa line.
The start and finish take place in Piazza Libertà, in the center of San Damiano d'Asti. The special stages also involve the municipalities of Ferrere and Costigliole d'Asti: during the race, roads are closed to traffic, so it is advisable to check municipal ordinances and the schedules published by the organization in advance.
