The ultimate rally challenge on the roads of the Pistoia Mountains
The Rally degli Abeti e Abetone is one of the most deep-rooted events in Tuscan motorsport. Organized by the Abeti Racing sports association in collaboration with the Automobile Club Pistoia, it is held annually on the demanding roads of the Pistoia Mountains, within the municipalities of Abetone Cutigliano and San Marcello Piteglio, in the Province of Pistoia. For over forty years, this race has united the great Italian rallying tradition with the charm of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
The track winds along the area's famous special stages, including the historic Torri di Popiglio and the Melo stage, immersed in the fir forests that give the event its name. The start and preliminary operations traditionally take place in the Campo Tizzoro area, while the triumphant finish is set in Piazza Matteotti, in the heart of San Marcello Pistoiese, where the public greets the crews at the end of the challenge.
The event is not just a race for modern rally cars (Rally2, Rally3, Rally4); for several seasons, it has also hosted the Historic Rally, dedicated to vintage cars, and a category for classic cars. This format allows spectators to see vehicles from different eras in action, from the stars of the golden age of rallying to today's most high-performance machines.
Beyond the competition, the Rally degli Abeti e Abetone is an opportunity to promote the entire Apennine Tuscany. The race is sponsored by the Tuscany Region, the Province of Pistoia, and the municipalities of San Marcello Piteglio and Abetone Cutigliano, serving as a major tourist attraction for an area that thrives on sport, nature, and mountain traditions. For fans, it is a chance to experience the adrenaline of rallying up close in a unique landscape.
Included in the Zone 7 Rally Cup and numerous side trophies, the event is considered one of the most prestigious tests in the regional calendar. Year after year, it records a record number of entries, confirming its status as a staple for drivers, co-drivers, and fans of the Pistoia Mountains.
The 43rd edition of the Rally degli Abeti e Abetone set a participation record with 110 crews at the start, confirming its status as one of the most attended races of the Tuscan season. The event, valid as the third round of the Zone 7 Rally Cup, featured a renewed route that remained true to tradition, with the debut of the new Dynamo Camp special stage. Alongside the modern race, the 13th edition of the Historic Rally and the new category for classic cars were held. The overall victory went to Rudy Michelini from Lucca, co-driven by Nicola Angilletta in a Skoda Fabia RS.
A total of seven timed special stages divided over three different tracks. The race was also valid for the Tuscan Rally Trophy, the Michelin and Pirelli Accademia trophies, and the ACI Pistoia Social Championship – Roberto Misseri Memorial.
The Pistoia Mountains can be reached by car from the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway (Pistoia exit), then following signs for San Marcello Pistoiese and Abetone along the SS66. By train, the reference station is Pistoia, which is connected to the mountains by bus.
The special stages take place on roads closed to traffic according to the official times published by the organization. It is essential to follow the marshals' instructions and position yourself only in areas designated for the public.
