The summer open-air theater festival at the Ferdinando II Municipal Arena
R...estate in San Nicola la Strada is the summer theater festival that has been enlivening the evenings in the town of San Nicola la Strada, in the province of Caserta, Campania, for several seasons. The wordplay in the title—«restate» (stay) and «r...estate» (re-summer)—perfectly captures the spirit of the initiative: inviting citizens to stay in town and experience the summer together, rather than leaving the streets empty. The stage is the Ferdinando II Municipal Arena, the outdoor space dedicated by the Municipality to summer performances.
The event is promoted by the Municipal Administration and organized in collaboration with the Pro Loco and the Municipal Civil Protection Unit, which manages audience reception and safety. Over the years, the festival has become a stable landmark for the community: in 2022, during its fifth edition, the program already featured six theater appointments alongside musical evenings, involving the Italian Amateur Theater Federation and local volunteer associations.
The heart of the program is Campanian amateur theater, with a clear prevalence of comedies in the Neapolitan language: traditional texts, brilliant reinterpretations, and original productions brought by companies from San Nicola la Strada, Caserta, and neighboring towns. Some evenings are competitive—the companies «in competition» are evaluated by a jury that awards prizes for acting and set design—while others are non-competitive, often for charity. Alongside prose, there is space for musical shows, singing and dancing evenings, and, according to the rules of the ninth edition, also cinematic events and screenings.
The municipal arena is an outdoor space equipped with a stage and tiered seating, used by the Municipality for summer events. The name pays tribute to Ferdinando II of Bourbon, a monarch linked to the history of the Caserta area and the nearby Royal Palace of Caserta, a UNESCO World Heritage site just a few minutes' drive away. The format is that of a classic town arena: outdoor seating, performances starting in the early evening, a family-friendly audience, and free admission.
More than just a schedule of shows, R...estate is a social gathering. The evenings attract an intergenerational audience, from children to the elderly, and the companies on stage are often made up of fellow citizens, parishioners, and volunteers: the audience recognizes their own neighbors on stage. It is a dimension typical of Campanian summer festivals, where amateur theater retains a strong social role and keeps the Neapolitan language and its comic repertoire alive.
Every year, the Administration publishes a call for theater companies, associations, and cultural operators to submit their artistic proposals. Applications are evaluated based on artistic quality, consistency with the festival's spirit, technical feasibility, and availability on the scheduled dates; the Municipality covers SIAE fees and, when necessary, audio and lighting services. For the 2026 edition, the Council has allocated a total budget of 5,000 euros, with a maximum fee of 800 euros for each evening.
A town of about twenty thousand inhabitants at the gates of Caserta, San Nicola la Strada is part of the provincial capital's urban belt and retains a strong link to Bourbon history: the Royal Boarding School and the Royal Palace Park are just a few steps away. An evening at the municipal arena is therefore also an opportunity to discover a less touristy piece of Campania, made of lively squares, dialect, and Caserta cuisine: buffalo mozzarella PDO, pasta and beans, and Neapolitan pastries in the town center's cafes.
For 2026, the summer festival in San Nicola la Strada changes its calendar slot and focuses on August, with three Saturday evening appointments at the Ferdinando II Municipal Arena: August 8, 15, and 22, 2026. The decision was made by the Municipal Council with a resolution on July 9, 2026, and formalized with a public notice on July 15.
The notice invited theater companies, associations, and cultural operators to submit their artistic proposals by 12 PM on July 21, 2026: theater shows, musical performances, cinematic events, festivals, screenings, or similar initiatives. The maximum expected fee is 800 euros per evening, out of a total budget of 5,000 euros; the Municipality covers SIAE fees and, if necessary, audio and lighting services. The selection takes into account artistic quality, consistency with the festival, technical feasibility, and availability on the indicated dates.
As in previous editions, the evenings begin in the early evening outdoors and are designed for a family audience from the Municipality and nearby towns in the province of Caserta. The festival's historical repertoire is that of Neapolitan-language comedy performed by local amateur companies, accompanied by musical shows. The final titles of the three August evenings will be communicated by the Municipality of San Nicola la Strada at the end of the selection process: it is advisable to follow institutional channels and local press in the days leading up to the events.
