About Carnival in the Square

Every year, at Largo Padre Leonardo Bello, the Pro Loco Quarto Miglio transforms the neighborhood square into a large festive space for Carnival. Confetti, costumes, baby dance, balloon animals, cotton candy, and popcorn accompany an afternoon designed for the families of Rome's Municipio VII. A long-awaited, free, and open-to-all tradition, born from volunteer work, which restores the square's function as a meeting place for generations.

A neighborhood festival in the heart of the Appian Way

The Quarto Miglio Carnival in the Square is the carnival event of the Roman neighborhood that stretches between the Appia Antica and Appia Pignatelli, in Rome's Municipio VII, in the Lazio region. It is not a historic postcard-perfect carnival nor a tourist attraction: it is a local festival, built from the ground up, that brings children, parents, and grandparents back to the same public space every year. The heart of the event is Largo Padre Leonardo Bello, the square that gives identity to Quarto Miglio and which has been redeveloped in recent years specifically to host the neighborhood's community life.

Who organizes it

The initiative is promoted by the Pro Loco Quarto Miglio, a non-profit volunteer association affiliated with UNPLI, which has been working for years to give the neighborhood its own cultural and tourist dimension. Throughout the year, the Pro Loco organizes markets, urban trekking, bike rides, meetings, and theatrical activities: however, Carnival is the moment when the square truly fills up, and when the association puts its ability to build community to the test. In several editions, the festival has taken place in collaboration with the San Tarcisio Martire Parish, which overlooks the same square and extends the celebrations in its own oratory.

What to find in the square

The program is simple and intentionally accessible, designed for an audience of all ages arriving on foot from the neighborhood streets. Over the last few editions, the festival has featured:

  • Holi Colors Festival with the throwing of colored powders, which has become the most anticipated and photographed moment of the afternoon;
  • kids' area with baby dance and entertainment dedicated to the little ones;
  • creative activities, particularly balloon animals;
  • food area with distribution of cotton candy and popcorn;
  • games and costumes, with the free participation of anyone who shows up in disguise.

In some editions, the afternoon in the square was accompanied by an ancient Roman-themed costume parade, featuring the figures of Herodes Atticus and Annia Regilla โ€” the two historical figures who, in the 2nd century AD, owned the very estate on the Appian Way from which the neighborhood takes part of its toponymy. It is a detail that says a lot about the character of Quarto Miglio: a modern residential neighborhood that lives daily alongside one of the most important archaeological landscapes in Europe.

The context: Quarto Miglio

The name of the neighborhood derives from its distance from the center of Rome along the Appian Way, measured in Roman miles. We are at the gates of the Appia Antica Regional Park, among tombs, catacombs, and stretches of original Roman paving. During the Carnival period, the entire area comes alive: the Pro Loco festival is usually joined by initiatives from the Casa del Parco dedicated to children and the celebrations of the parish oratory, effectively creating a widespread weekend of events just a short distance from each other.

Who it is designed for

It is a free, open-air, family-friendly festival. It requires no reservation or ticket and is primarily aimed at residents, but gladly welcomes those arriving from other neighborhoods in Rome's southeast quadrant or those visiting the Appia Antica for the day. Those participating in the Holi Colors Festival would do well to wear clothes that can get dirty: the colored powders are the event's trademark and spare no one.

A recent but already deep-rooted tradition

Although it is a young event compared to the great Italian carnivals, the Carnival in the Square has established itself as an annual custom of Quarto Miglio. The dates follow the mobile Carnival calendar and are communicated from year to year by the Pro Loco through the official poster, the association's social channels, and the neighborhood portal quartomiglio.rm.it. It is not uncommon for the program to undergo last-minute changes due to the weather: it is always advisable to check the final date before heading out.

Carnival in the Square โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Carnival in the Square was held at Largo Padre Leonardo Bello with the Holi Colors Festival as the day's highlight. Initially announced for Saturday, February 14, the festival was rescheduled by the Pro Loco Quarto Miglio to Shrove Tuesday, February 17, keeping the program intact: entertainment for children, baby dance, balloon animals, and free distribution of cotton candy and popcorn.

Carnival in the Square 2026

The Pro Loco Quarto Miglio invited citizens and visitors to participate in the Carnival in the Square at Largo Padre Leonardo Bello, in the Quarto Miglio neighborhood of Rome. The event, announced for Saturday, February 14, starting at 3:00 PM, was subsequently rescheduled to Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026, with the same formula.

The highlight of the day was the Holi Colors Festival, with the traditional throwing of colored powders that now characterizes the event. Next to the central square, an area dedicated to the little ones hosted baby dance and entertainment, while creative activities offered balloon animals. There was also a food area with distribution of cotton candy and popcorn.

The organization described the initiative as "a rich and inclusive experience, with moments of entertainment for all ages": the stated goal remains to strengthen the neighborhood's community ties through the shared use of the square.

On the same weekend, the neighborhood hosted other carnival events: the Casa del Parco of the Appia Antica offered a morning for children on Saturday, February 14, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, while the Oratory of the San Tarcisio Martire Parish, on the same square, organized its own Carnival party.
