The grassroots Christmas of the Pruvulera district, featuring nativity scenes, lights, and rediscovered alleyways
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Torre Annunziata, within the Metropolitan City of Naples, lies a corner of the historic center that locals have always called Pruvulera: the Provolera district, a maze of alleys, arches, and courtyards tucked behind the main street. Every December, these streets transform for the Tree Festival, a grassroots celebration that has quickly become one of the most cherished Christmas events in this Vesuvius-area city.
The Tree Festival is organized by the Neighborhood Committee in collaboration with the RI-BELLO project, a network of residents and volunteers dedicated to the regeneration of the Pruvulera area. The organizers' goal is both simple and ambitious: to show that 'Torre Annunziata is more than just the main street' and to restore dignity and visibility to a district long considered marginalized. As committee representatives have noted, the revival of the historic center 'starts from the bottom' but requires support from the municipal administration. The third edition, held in December 2025, confirmed the successful formula: combining tradition, community, and Christmas spirit to engage residents and visitors of all ages.
The heart of the day is a neighborhood walk, leading visitors from courtyard to courtyard to visit the nativity scene. Along the way, you will find installations and small exhibits curated by the residents themselves:
A large part of the program is aimed at families: the entertainment for children with Santa Claus and his elves is the most anticipated moment, and in 2025, it filled the alleys for the entire duration of the festival. This is a deliberate choice by the organizers, who want to bring generations together and help children rediscover the traditions of their own neighborhood: a community-scale Christmas, without stages or large productions, where everything happens just a few steps from home.
The Tree Festival is part of the Municipality of Torre Annunziata's Christmas calendar, titled 'Oplonti and the Magic of Christmas,' which runs from December 8th to January 6th. It includes three Santa Claus villages, video mapping on the facades of four churches, a large tree in the courtyard of Palazzo Criscuolo, eight concerts in city parishes, and the living nativity scene on Via Supportico, next to the Basilica of the Madonna della Neve. In the Pruvulera, the district adds its own nativity display on December 8th, serving as a prelude to the festival the following Sunday.
In a region like Campania, which is rich in Christmas events, the Tree Festival does not focus on big numbers but on authenticity. It is a festival built by the neighborhood itself, and it is perhaps the best way to see the less touristy side of Torre Annunziata, a city that also hosts the Oplontis excavations with the famous Villa of Poppaea. Those who arrive here on a December Sunday will find illuminated alleys, homemade nativity scenes, the scent of Christmas sweets, and people happy to share the stories of their streets. It is a brief experience—just a few hours in the afternoon—but a very genuine one, best enjoyed by walking without haste.
The event is traditionally held on a Sunday afternoon in mid-December. In 2025, it was scheduled for December 14th, from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers; it is advisable to follow the Neighborhood Committee's channels and local press in the weeks leading up to the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
As of the update of this entry, neither the date nor the program for the 2026 edition of the Provolera Tree Festival in Torre Annunziata (Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania) has been published.
Based on previous editions, the event is expected to take place on a Sunday afternoon in mid-December, in the alleys and courtyards of the Pruvulera district, following the usual format of a neighborhood walk, nativity scenes, exhibitions, and children's entertainment. However, none of this information is confirmed for 2026.
For the official date, it is advisable to follow the communications from the Neighborhood Committee and the RI-BELLO project, as well as the Christmas calendar of the Municipality of Torre Annunziata, which gathers city events from December 8th to Epiphany every year.
The festival takes place in the alleys and courtyards of the Provolera (Pruvulera) district, in the historic center of Torre Annunziata, behind the main street. The entire area is pedestrian-only: the streets of the district are public and access is free.
