About Manouche Jazz Gathering

The Procida Manouche Jazz Gathering is a free, open-air festival that has been bringing the music of Django Reinhardt to the smallest island in the Gulf of Naples since 2017. Conceived by local guitarist Alessandro Butera, it combines concerts in the island's most iconic spots—Terra Murata, Marina Corricella, Chiaiolella, and Marina Grande—with manouche guitar masterclasses, jam sessions, and meetings between Italian and international musicians. Days of listening and sharing, all with free admission.

A guitar gathering in the heart of the Gulf of Naples

The Procida Manouche Jazz Gathering is one of the most original events in the Campanian jazz scene. Rather than being built around a single stage, it is an open-air event: the music moves day by day between the marinas, terraces, and courtyards of the island, following the light and the slow rhythm of Procidan life. The common thread is manouche jazz, the musical language invented in the 1930s by Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hot Club de France, characterized by acoustic guitars, violin, double bass, and improvisation.

The event takes place in the Municipality of Procida, in the Province of Naples, Campania: an island of just over four square kilometers that was the Italian Capital of Culture in 2022. Thanks to its intimate scale, it lends itself perfectly to a festival where the public and musicians end up sharing the same alleys, beaches, and tables.

From 2017 to today: the history

The Gathering was born in 2017 from an idea by local guitarist Alessandro Butera, who still serves as artistic director. In just a few years, the event has become a cult favorite for genre enthusiasts, attracting musicians from all over Italy and abroad. The formula remains unchanged: free concerts, masterclasses open to players, jam sessions that last until late at night, and a convivial atmosphere that is an integral part of the project.

Over the years, the program has expanded beyond the strict manouche repertoire, welcoming world music, folk, singer-songwriter music, and projects that reinterpret the Neapolitan musical tradition. The underlying idea, reaffirmed by the organizers, is that music is primarily about sound, research, and composition, rather than genre labels.

The locations: an open-air stage

The choice of locations is one of the Gathering's greatest strengths. Each concert is designed for a specific setting:

  • Terra Murata, the fortified village that dominates the island from above, featuring the former Bourbon prison complex and the Piazzetta Guarracino: the site of the most intense evening concerts;
  • Marina Corricella, the famous fishing village with its colorful houses, where the music is enjoyed while sitting on the quay;
  • Marina Chiaiolella, the small port overlooking the islet of Vivara, an ideal space for daytime masterclasses and jam sessions;
  • Marina Grande and the Spiaggia della Lingua, for more informal afternoon appointments, with the sea just a few meters from the instruments.

The masterclasses: the educational core

One of the pillars of the Gathering is the manouche jazz guitar masterclass, designed as a comprehensive educational experience rather than a simple demonstration. The days include group lessons divided by level, in-depth studies on technique, repertoire, and stylistic awareness, as well as ensemble practice sessions that naturally lead into the evening jam sessions.

Over the years, leading teachers from the Italian and European scenes have participated. Participants can stay in partner accommodations on the island: a deliberate choice, because the Gathering builds its identity through the sharing of days—not just lesson hours. Places are limited and registration closes well in advance of the event.

Free admission and atmosphere

All Gathering concerts are free. This feature, combined with its open-air nature, has made the event popular far beyond the specialist audience: during the festival, the island's small squares, alleys, terraces, and beaches fill with thousands of spectators from all over Italy and abroad. Those who arrive for the sea end up staying to listen, and those who arrive for the music discover an island that, in June, has not yet reached the peak of the high season.

When to go and how to plan

The Gathering is traditionally held in June, over a long weekend. It is the best time to visit Procida: temperatures are already summery, the sea is perfect for swimming, and connections with Naples and Pozzuoli are frequent. Given the limited capacity of the island's accommodations, it is advisable to book lodging and restaurants well in advance.

Manouche Jazz Gathering — edition 2026

The 9th edition of the Procida Manouche Jazz Gathering took place from Thursday, June 11 to Sunday, June 14, 2026. Four days dedicated to the music of Django Reinhardt, opened by a concert by Chiaré in the courtyard of the former Terra Murata prison, followed by manouche guitar masterclasses, jam sessions, and free concerts in the most evocative spots of the island, in the Province of Naples.

The ninth edition

The Procida Manouche Jazz Gathering returned in 2026 with its 9th edition, scheduled from June 11 to 14. Four days—one more than the three-day formula of previous editions—built around the three keywords chosen by the artistic direction: music, study, and sharing.

The 2026 lineup brought together Chiaré, Daniele Corvasce, Filippo Dall'Asta, Nicolson, PS5, Sara Gioielli, and Suonno d'Ajere: a plurality of artistic proposals that, while remaining faithful to the tribute to Django Reinhardt, broadened its scope to include singer-songwriter music, the rediscovery of Neapolitan tradition, and contemporary sound research.

The inaugural concert, on Thursday, June 11 at 9:00 PM, was held in an unusual space steeped in memory: the courtyard of the former Terra Murata prison, the fortified village that dominates Procida from above. In the following days, the programming moved between the marinas and the small squares of the island, alternating free concerts, masterclasses, and jam sessions.

Practical information — Manouche Jazz Gathering

How to get there

Procida can only be reached by sea. Ferries and hydrofoils depart from Naples (Molo Beverello for hydrofoils, Calata Porta di Massa for ferries) and from Pozzuoli, with frequent connections especially in the summer season; the crossing from Pozzuoli takes about 25-40 minutes, and from Naples slightly longer. The landing point is Marina Grande. On the island, you can get around on foot, by local minibus, or by taxi: access for non-resident cars is strictly limited in the summer months, so it is best to leave your vehicle on the mainland.

Admission and costs

All concerts are free and open to the public. The manouche guitar masterclasses require registration and a fee, with limited spots and packages that may include accommodation on the island: fees and procedures are communicated by the organizers on the Gathering's social media channels.

Where to stay

Procida mainly offers B&Bs, holiday homes, and small hotels, concentrated between Marina Grande, Corricella, and Chiaiolella. During the Gathering weekend, availability runs out quickly: advance booking is essential. Alternatively, you can stay in Naples or Pozzuoli and reach the island for the day.

Tips

Bring comfortable shoes: the climb to Terra Murata is steep and the evening concerts take place high up, above the port. It is worth arriving a few hours early to visit the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo and enjoy the sunset over the Gulf before the music begins.
