The silent ritual of Good Friday in Montemesola
Every year, on the night of Good Friday, the small town of Montemesola, in the province of Taranto, gathers for one of the most evocative rituals of the Apulian Holy Week: the Procession of the Mysteries. It is not a spectacle, but an act of collective devotion that involves the entire community. The procession starts from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and, after slowly winding through the streets of the town center, returns there, completing the journey of the Passion.
What makes the Montemesola procession unique is the absolute silence that envelops every phase: from the bearers to the confreres, and the people following and watching. A composed and rigorous silence that becomes part of the ritual itself, a hallmark of a devotion expressed without fanfare. It is broken, from time to time, only by the ancient sound of the troccola, the wooden instrument that marks the pace of the procession.
Among the most evocative figures are the perdoni, the hooded members of the two confraternities, with their faces covered by white hoods and long robes brushing the asphalt. They walk barefoot, as penitents, under the symbolic weight of the cross. Beside them walk the women with candles and those 'al laccio' (tethered), the bearers who carry the sacred statues on their shoulders, and the crociferi (cross-bearers). In recent years, female participation has grown significantly, with nearly one hundred women taking part in the rites, overcoming ancient traditional barriers.
The organization is entrusted to the Confraternity of San Michele Arcangelo and the Confraternity of the Santissimo Rosario, guardians of a devotional memory that in Montemesola is intertwined with the very identity of the town. They take care of every detail of the Holy Week Rites, from the procession of the Addolorata to the Procession of the Mysteries on Good Friday.
The Procession of the Mysteries of Montemesola is part of the great tradition of Easter rites in Puglia, and particularly in the Ionian area around Taranto, where Holy Week is a powerful marker of identity. For visitors, witnessing the slow and silent passage of the procession through the village streets is an opportunity to connect with the most authentic soul of this territory.
In 2026, the Procession of the Mysteries of Montemesola recorded unprecedented participation, to the point of being described by local news as "the longest procession ever." The cortege, which started from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, silently crossed the streets of the center accompanied by the sound of the troccola.
The two confraternities, of San Michele Arcangelo (led by prior Giovanni Guida) and of the Santissimo Rosario, guided a procession composed of numerous hooded penitents, bearers, and devout followers who made the edition particularly solemn and well-attended.
The Procession of the Mysteries took place on the evening of Good Friday, April 3, 2026, starting and ending at the Church of San Michele Arcangelo.
Record numbers for the 2026 edition:
The silent passage of the hooded penitents and the sacred statues carried on shoulders, with the record participation that made this the "longest ever" edition.
