About Assunta Procession

Every year on August 14th, the village of Vitorchiano pays homage to the Madonna Assunta with an evocative procession through the streets of its historic center. The image of the Virgin is carried on the ancient wooden Processional Machine—an imposing, gilded and silver-plated carved structure dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, restored in 2006—housed in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, the oldest in the town. A moment of faith, tradition, and popular participation in the heart of the Viterbo Tuscia region.

A centuries-old tradition in the 'hanging village'

The Procession of the Madonna Assunta is one of the most heartfelt and evocative moments in the religious calendar of Vitorchiano, the famous "hanging village" of the Tuscia region in the province of Viterbo, Lazio. Every year on August 14th, on the eve of the Assumption, the community gathers around the image of the Virgin, carried in procession through the streets of the medieval historic center, amidst peperino stone houses, alleys, and small squares overlooking the cliff. Devotion to the Assunta is deeply rooted in the town's history: it is no coincidence that the oldest church in the village is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo.

The Processional Machine

The heart of the celebration is the ancient Processional Machine, an imposing carved, gilded, and silver-plated wooden structure created between the 17th and 19th centuries and restored to its former glory in 2006. The image of the Virgin is placed on a wooden base symbolizing a halo of clouds, flanked by cherubs in various positions on leaf scrolls; above, the scrolls support a large, richly crafted crown topped by a crucifix. Carried on shoulders along the route, the Machine is simultaneously a work of art, an object of devotion, and a symbol of Vitorchiano's identity, following a tradition that finds its greatest expression in the Tuscia region through processional machines, such as the famous Macchina di Santa Rosa in Viterbo.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo

The procession starts from the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, the oldest religious building in Vitorchiano, located within the first circle of walls on Via Santa Maria. Documented as early as the 15th century—with the bell tower restored in 1458 and works carried out in 1474 by Lombard craftsmen—the church was consecrated in 1533 by the Bishop of Bagnoregio. The gabled facade is embellished with a Gothic rose window and a peperino portal, while the single-nave interior with wooden trusses houses a 15th-century panel of the Virgin Assunta, a 1590 wooden crucifix by Joannes Parisiensis, and frescoes by the Master of Corchiano.

The eve of Ferragosto

On the evening of August 14th, the procession crosses the village in a solemn and intimate atmosphere: the Machine with the effigy of the Madonna moves between two lines of faithful and visitors, accompanied by the prayers and songs of the parish community. It is a moment when Vitorchiano best expresses the bond between faith, tradition, and popular participation, engaging not only residents but also the many tourists who visit the town, which is listed among the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy'.

In the heart of the Vitorchiano summer

The procession is part of the rich Vitorchiano summer program, promoted by the Municipality of Vitorchiano together with local associations. During these same weeks, the village hosts the Threshing and Plowing Festival, the Vitorchiano Film Festival, the Cavatello Festival, and Gnocchi in Piazza. Those choosing to spend Ferragosto in the Lazio region will find in Vitorchiano a unique blend of spirituality, gastronomy, and culture, just a few kilometers from Viterbo and the wonders of the Tuscia.

A community heritage

More than just an event, the Procession of the Madonna Assunta is an identity-defining ritual passed down from generation to generation. The care with which the Machine is preserved and carried in procession speaks to the attachment of the people of Vitorchiano to their roots: an intangible heritage that, together with the landscape of the peperino cliff, makes Vitorchiano one of the most authentic destinations in Lazio.

Assunta Procession — edition 2026

On Friday, August 14, 2026, Vitorchiano renews its appointment with the Procession of the Madonna Assunta, part of the summer program promoted by the Municipality. The ancient gilded and silver-plated wooden Processional Machine will once again parade through the streets of the historic center on the eve of Ferragosto, in one of the most anticipated moments of faith and tradition of the year in the Viterbo Tuscia village.

The 2026 edition of the procession

The 2026 Procession of the Madonna Assunta is confirmed for Friday, August 14th, as part of the Vitorchiano summer program, the rich calendar of events accompanying the village from June to September. As per tradition, the image of the Virgin will be carried in procession on the historic Processional Machine housed in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, crossing the alleys of the historic center of Vitorchiano, in the province of Viterbo.

The event comes at the peak of a particularly lively summer: in the preceding weeks, the village hosts the Threshing and Plowing Festival, the Vitorchiano Film Festival, the Cavatello Festival, and Gnocchi in Piazza, while the Solidarity Dinner promoted by the Municipality with the parish Caritas is scheduled for August 22nd. The times and route of the procession will be announced by the Parish and the Municipality of Vitorchiano in the days leading up to the event.
