The solemn Good Friday procession in the historic center of Tolentino
In the heart of the Marche region, in the province of Macerata, the Municipality of Tolentino preserves one of the most deeply rooted religious traditions in its calendar: the Good Friday Procession, known to all as the Procession of the Dead Christ. It is an event that every year gathers faithful, citizens, and visitors along the streets of the historic center, in a climate of silence and devotion that marks the most intense moment of the city's Holy Week.
The event is managed by the Pia Unione del Cristo Morto e Beata Vergine Addolorata, which every year, on the occasion of Easter, organizes the procession and all the religious celebrations related to the Passion of Christ. This is a time-honored custom that has become part of the identity of Tolentino and the entire community of the Province of Macerata. The procession is attended by the city's confraternities, the Archconfraternity of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus, known as that of the "sacconi", the brothers in traditional dress, and the band, accompanied by civil and religious authorities.
Good Friday in Tolentino is not just the evening procession: it is an entire day of liturgies and prayer moments that follow one another from morning to evening at the Co-Cathedral of San Catervo. It begins with the Crucifixion at noon, continues with the pious practice of the Three Hours of Agony of Jesus Christ and the Adoration of the Cross, culminating in the procession that crosses the center.
The procession starts from the Co-Cathedral of San Catervo and follows the main streets of the city: viale Cesare Battisti, corso Garibaldi, via Roma, viale Buozzi, and adjacent streets, with a significant stop in piazza della Libertà for a blessing, before returning to the co-cathedral. Along the route, organizers traditionally invite residents to decorate and illuminate their terraces and windows, contributing to the evocative atmosphere that characterizes the evening.
The Procession of the Dead Christ is much more than a religious rite: it is a heritage of popular traditions that tells the soul of Tolentino and the Marche region. For those visiting the city during Easter, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic event, far from mass tourist circuits, where faith, history, and community intertwine in the illuminated streets of the village.
The 2026 edition of the Procession of the Dead Christ takes place in Tolentino on Friday, April 3, 2026, Good Friday. The day follows the traditional liturgical schedule at the Co-Cathedral of San Catervo, concluding with the evening procession through the historic center.
This year again, the organizers invite residents of houses along the procession route to decorate and illuminate their terraces and windows, to accompany the passage of the procession.
