About Ring Joust

Every summer, San Ginesio, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy overlooking the Sibillini Mountains, relives its Middle Ages with the Palio: the Ring Joust on July 5th opens the racing season. Four knights, selected in the morning, compete in the afternoon by piercing suspended rings with their lances, paired by draw to the four city gates – Alvaneto, Ascarana, Offuna, and Picena. Historical pageants, flag-wavers, drummers, and period costumes animate the historic center in a re-enactment that blends equestrian skill, tradition, and San Ginesio identity.

The Palio di San Ginesio

The Palio di San Ginesio is the most important historical re-enactment in the Macerata village, organized by the Associazione Tradizioni Sanginesine ASD APS. Founded in 1970, it brings back to life the medieval spirit of San Ginesio, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, perched at over 680 meters above sea level in the heart of the Marche region, between the Fiastra valley and the Sibillini Mountains. The Palio consists of two distinct equestrian competitions: the Ring Joust, scheduled for July 5th, and the Pacca Joust, which takes place on August 15th as part of the medieval week.

The Ring Joust

The Ring Joust is a competition of precision and skill on horseback: each knight, galloping along the track, must pierce a series of suspended rings with their lance, with progressively smaller sizes. It is a test that recalls the ancient military training of medieval knights, blending dexterity, courage, and spectacle. The joust pits the representatives of the four historic gates of San Ginesio against each other: Alvaneto, Ascarana, Offuna, and Picena, each with its own colors and banner.

The Day's Program

The Sunday of July 5th follows a proven formula: in the morning, the selection trials take place, from which the four best knights emerge. In the afternoon, after the draw that pairs them with the four gates, the finalists compete for the Palio in the actual joust. The competition is preceded by a historical costume pageant that winds through the historic center, reinforcing the link between equestrian competition, re-enactment, and civic identity.

Medieval Atmosphere

  • Parades of figures in period costumes, ladies, nobles, and armed men;
  • Bugle players, drummers, and flag-wavers;
  • The four city gates animated by their own colors and coats of arms;
  • The setting of the historic center, with the Collegiate Church, the castle walls, and views of the Sibillini Mountains.

San Ginesio and its Traditions

San Ginesio, in the province of Macerata, is famous for its vibrant re-enactment life. The Palio is ideally linked to the memory of the Return of the Exiles, the re-enactment that commemorates the inhabitants forced to flee to Siena in the 15th century and later welcomed back home, an episode that forged a historical bond between the two cities. The Ring Joust thus opens a long summer of events culminating in the medieval week of mid-August, making the Marche village a prime destination for those seeking history, landscape, and authentic popular traditions.

Ring Joust — edition 2026

The 55th edition of the Palio di San Ginesio opens on Sunday, July 5, 2026, with the Ring Joust. In the morning, selection trials identify the four finalist knights, who are paired by draw in the afternoon to the four gates – Alvaneto, Ascarana, Offuna, and Picena. This year's novelty is the historical costume pageant preceding the equestrian joust.

The 55th edition (LV) of the Palio di San Ginesio kicks off with the Ring Joust, the first equestrian competition of the season, scheduled for Sunday, July 5, 2026. In the morning, selection trials are held to determine the four best knights; in the afternoon, after the draw that pairs them with the four city gates, the finalists compete for the Palio.

Among the edition's novelties is a historical costume pageant that precedes the joust, reinforcing the link between competition and re-enactment. Roberto Parnetti confirmed as Field Master. The organization is handled by the Associazione Tradizioni Sanginesine.
